Hi-Liner girls tennis won a home doubleheader against Grand Forks Central and Fargo Shanley on Friday, then tied for seventh at the 16-team East/West Invitational in West Fargo, N.D.
Hi-Liner softball, having struggled to capitalize in recent games, scrambled the batting order and won both of Fridayâ€™s games at Grand Forks Central, taking the first contest 13-3 and the second 15-4.
â€śWe flip-flopped No. 2 through No. 7 in the batting order,â€ť Valley City head coach Jason Lindgren said. â€śTheyâ€™ve been in same spots for years, and maybe some got comfortable. We hit better, and weâ€™ll find out early this week how our newfangled lineup works against Fargo North and West Fargo.â€ť

Valley City State sophomore Jessica Meland won the Womenâ€™s Shot Put and the Womenâ€™s Hammer Throw, sophomore Jenna Coghlan the Womenâ€™s Javelin Throw and senior Wayne Engelhard the Menâ€™s 1,500-meter Run as the Vikings hosted Fridayâ€™s North Star Athletic Association Invitational against Jamestown, Dickinson State and Dakota State.
Melandâ€™s toss of 12.12 meters (39 feet, 9.25 inches) earned her the Shot Put crown before she took the top Hammer Throw spot at 50.08 meters (164 feet, 4 inches).
While North Dakota State College of Science student Andrew Sadek remains missing, it has been confirmed that the 20-year-old from the Valley City area has an outstanding arrest warrant in Richland County for two counts of delivery of a controlled substance.
Valley City High School Band Director Tom Kjelland and his students are gearing up for the annual Jazzin' Concert next Thursday.
The concert will be held Thursday, May 15 at 7 p.m. in the Hi-Liner Activity Center with tickets available before the show. Pre-sale of tickets for the show will be Monday, May 12 from 5-6:30 p.m. in the HAC lobby and before the sixth-grade and junior high concert on Tuesday, May 13. A lunch will be served at the show.

Valley City State University alumnus Paul Sandnessâ€”general counsel and corporate secretary of MDU Resources Group (MDU) in Bismarck, N.D.â€”will deliver the keynote address at VCSUâ€™s 122nd commencement exercises, to be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 17, 2014, in W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse on the VCSU campus.
Sandness grew up on a farm near LaMoure, N.D., and then attended VCSU, graduating in 1976 with a major in English education and a minor in German. He went on to earn a Juris Doctor degree from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1979.

Jill DeVries, previously the Valley City State womenâ€™s basketball coach of 14 years before stepping down last June, is the coach once again, athletic director Jack Denholm announced on Tuesday.
DeVries replaces Cathy Hanek, who resigned after one season.
