After weeks of poor Menâ€™s Day weather, golfers were very excited to get back to the course and swing the sticks. Bob Matthews started the day off with a long putt on Hole 1, and won a prize sponsored by Bank Forward. Pizza Ranch sponsored the Closest to the Pin contest on Hole 2, and it was claimed by Alex Bitz. Jamie Wirth took home the prize on Hole 3 for Closest Shot from Outside 50 Yards with an approach shot that settled nicely to the pin. Wirth continued his day with the Closest Second Shot on Hole 4, and won a prize sponsored by Taco Johnâ€™s.
Lexia Nix, 11, of Valley City, N.D., Matthew Lyter, 15, of Sanborn, N.D., and a record number of the countryâ€™s top bowlers opened the 2014 Junior Gold Bowling Championships on Monday in Buffalo, N.Y.
Nix qualified for Junior Golds in second at 722 behind U12 Girls champion Kaelyn Bergâ€™s 733 at May 3-4â€™s North Dakota State Pepsi Championships at Sunset Lanes 2014in Moorhead, Minn. Lyter took second with a 1,204 behind U15 winner Logan Dalbolâ€™s 1,258.
Dierra Diegel scored 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting, went 3-for-3 from the line and pulled down eight rebounds as the 38th Lions Class A Girls Basketball All-Stars erased a five-point deficit with 1:35 left, forced overtime and cruised to a 79-68 win Tuesday at the Bismarck Civic Center.
â€śItâ€™s an honor,â€ť said Diegel, the 5-foot-10-inch Hi-Liner forward who practiced with Bismarck Century head coach Ron Metz and Class A twice on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. â€śI donâ€™t remember the last time someone from Valley City was selected.â€ť
Construction work on the Interstate 94 business loop east in Valley City will begin on Wednesday, July 16 east of the city limits to I-94. Crews will be making asphalt improvements and constructing turning lanes, lighting and guardrails on the I-94 business loop in Valley City. Motorists should be advised of reduced speed limits, width restrictions and temporary lane closures.
Wolski Plaza Road will be realigned/reconstructed as part of this project. The realignment will provide safer access to the I-94 business loop.

A flea market held near Valley City Saturday was a success according to organizers. About 22 vendors showed up to the fee-free flea market held on the grass field in front of Bowen Welding all day Saturday. More in Tuesday's Times-Record.
Nothing more than a hole remains where a flood buy-out house once stood on Fifth Avenue Southeast where houses are being torn down in preparation for permanent flood protection in the college area of Valley City.

Dawson Dietrich, Garret Suhr and Valley City Babe Ruth held Steele scoreless through six combined innings at home on Monday, setting the scoreboard ablaze to claim July 19-22â€™s top District 6 Tournament seed with a 10-0, five-inning District romp and a 21-2, five-inning District season-ending demolition.
â€śWe played some pretty good baseball today,â€ť Babe Ruth head coach Lance Lukes said. â€śBoth pitchers struggled in their first innings, but then settled in with the lead that they were given.â€ť
Gov. Jack Dalrymple Friday appointed Jerod E. Tufte to the Southeast Judicial District Court bench which serves Barnes, Dickey, Eddy, Foster, Griggs, Kidder, LaMoure, Logan, McIntosh, Ransom, Richland, Sargent, Stutsman and Wells counties. replaces John Paulson who has retired after serving more than 30 years on the bench.
