The Valley City City Commission unanimously approved phase one of the city's permanent flood protection construction plan during a regular meeting Tuesday.
The plan, estimated at $12.5 million, includes permanent flood protection in the Valley City State University area.

Third-graders at Jefferson Elementary School released blue balloons into the sky Wednesday afternoon in an effort to raise autism awareness. Autism is a developmental brain disorder that impairs a person's ability to communicate and interact socially.
The event was organized by Jennifer Cabezas, who has twin boys, Ethan and Shelby, in the third grade who have autism. Wednesday is World Autism Awareness Day, and Cabezas wants the community to know how many people are affected by the disease.

Mother Nature played a cruel April Fool's prank by dumping more than a foot of wet, heavy snow to dig out from under on Tuesday. Throughout Valley City and Barnes County, snow blowers and plows could be spotted while vehicles spun and fishtailed through snow-packed streets.
A hearing to determine the legality of unilateral contracts that the Valley City Public School Board issued to Valley City teachers has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 16 at 1 p.m. at the Barnes County Courthouse.

Valley City State head football coach Dennis McCulloch announced
on Tuesday the addition of four more student-athletes.
Quarterback Kiefer Langan from St. John, N.D., linebacker Isaac Yturralde from El Paso, Texas, linebacker Chanzce Jones from Houston, Texas and projected wide receiver Antoine Griffin from Patrick AFB, Fla. have signed Letters of Intent to attend VCSU and play football for the Vikings this fall.
