Salvation Army Does Backpack Program

September 3, 2013

Backpacks filled with school supplies were given to families in need by the Barnes County Salvation Army, said Lee Isensee, chairman of the county organization.
Thursday Isensee said the Barnes County Salvation Army's school and backpack program was chaired by Jana Olson and Dave Carlsrud.

Eagles Hosts Polka Fest

The Valley City Eagles Club held its annual Polka Fest Saturday
and Sunday. A crowd was on hand both days to dance to polka and old-time country music including songs by Albert Mikesh, a one-man-band.

Meeting Was Official Griggs County Meeting

September 3, 2013

An opinion issued Wednesday by North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem requires the Griggs County Commission give John Wakefield meeting minutes of a Feb. 12 meeting without charge.
Wakefield asked the attorney general for an opinion on his position that county commissioners violated North Dakota's open records and open meeting laws.

Vikings Sweep NSAA Week 1 Football Awards

Valley City State swept the first North Star Athletic Association weekly football honors, the NSAA announced Monday. The Vikings, an NAIA Top 25 Preseason Coaches' Poll team, defeated Jamestown 31-14 in the annual Paint Bucket rivalry game.

VCSU junior linebacker Austin Flores is the Defensive Player of the Week, having recorded four solo tackles and assisted eight tackles, and had an interception and two forced fumbles in the game.

Vikings Beat Jimmies, Reclaim Paint Bucket Trophy

Rain clouds loomed over Jamestown's Taylor Stadium as Valley City State came to reclaim the Paint Bucket trophy in the 52nd installment of the rivalry with the Jimmies.

The eager Vikings forced three fumbles and an interception to bring the trophy back to Valley City with a 31-14 win.

Bridge City Cruisers Restores Car for Local Veteran

August 30, 2013

Ryan Metcalf, Valley City, saw his fully-restored car for the first time Thursday evening, after local car club Bridge City Cruisers spent more than a year restoring it as a gift to him.
The project came about in 2011 after Ryan's wife Erin asked the club to restore his 1966 Chevy Impala, which he bought from his grandfather three years ago, while he was deployed in Afghanistan with the North Dakota National Guard.

The Valley City Police Department warns residents of a reported scam.
A Valley City resident reported on Wednesday he received a call from a caller who advised him of an IRS settlement. Later he received a call from the Department of Motor Vehicles in Valley City telling him that his driver's license was revoked because of a letter from an attorney.
The first calls came from (530) 567-2511 and (530) 235-6505. The last call came from 845-3812 which is the DMV's phone number but police confirmed the DMV did not place the call and that the man's license was current.

Signs Remind Drivers to Slow Down Near Schools

New signs, purchased with a Safe Routes to School grant, let drivers passing Washington Elementary School and Jefferson Elementary School know just how fast they are going in the 20 miles-per-hour zone. The new signs are meant to help remind motorists to slow down.

BC Steam Thresher Visits MN

A 1913 Gaar Scott steam traction engine restored by the Jury family of Barnes County traveled to Rollag, Minn., early this week to be part of the 60th anniversary Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion Friday through Monday, Sept. 2, said Lori Jury.
Dan Voegele of Bismarck along with Neil Pederson of Valley City helped load the engine owned by Jon and Lori Jury of rural Valley City early Monday morning.

Hi-Liner Tennis on the Upswing

Perennial tennis championship contender Grand Forks Red River visited Valley City for an Eastern Dakota Conference match on Thursday amid a week of heat-induced schedule changes.

Red River took the match, 9-0, though Hi-Liner head coach Matt Nielson was impressed with his team's efforts.

"Red River is Red River," Nielson said. "They haven't won the state championship 14 consecutive time because they are lucky — they are the best in the state. Their No. 1's to No. 4's all have the talent to win the state championship. Their No. 5, (Andrew) Godon, took 5th in the state last year."
