Independence Day is just a couple days away, and after the barbecues, road trips and parties, the fireworks are the main event.
And with them, come the annual fireworks safety reminders and warnings.
Two weeks ago the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) released its Fireworks Report, which shows that in 2010 alone, an estimated 15,500 fires and 8,600 emergency room visits were caused by consumer fireworks.
The NFPA is now teaming with the American Academy of Pediatrics and 21 other state and national organizations to form the “Alliance to Stop Consumer Fireworks (ASCF).”
July 1st
July tends to be crunch time for American Legion baseball teams, and the Valley City Post 60 baseball team sees it no differently.
In the next three weeks, Post 60 will only play sectional opponents as it concludes the regular season. The team will then play in the Section 1 tournament starting July 24, and potentially the state tournament, which starts August 1.
With that in mind, the team didn’t stress out too much in its 15-3 loss to Kindred Sunday in the third place game of the Leevers Classic tournament at Charlie Brown Memorial Field.
Three players from the Fargo-Moorhead area will be continuing their baseball careers at Valley City State University next year.
VCSU coach Casey Olney announced Sunday that three players from Minnesota State Community and Technical College— Bryce Venaas, Anthony Myer, and Cole Honl — have signed with the team and will transfer to VCSU for the 2013 season. All three are originally from the Fargo-Moorhead area.

A small chance of rain might offer a brief respite from the heat on Saturday, but a lack of winds will make for a humid Sunday if it does fall.
Today will be hot and dry with a high temperature of around 89 degrees, but the area will see a 20 percent chance of rain beginning this evening that will carry over to a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms throughout the day on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service graphical forecast data.
Vince Godon, a NWS meteorologist in Grand Forks, said if the weather does get wet on Saturday it’s hard to tell how much will fall.
Thanks to a local farmer, Barnes County 4-H Council was awarded $2,500 from Monsanto’s America’s Farmers Grow Communities Grant.Â
Ellen Bjelland, Barnes County’s 4-H extension agent, said that soybean farmers can nominate their favorite non-profit organizations to receive grants from Monsanto. Thirty-nine states participate in this grant program, and of all the nominations that come from a particular county, Monsanto selects one to receive the grant.
Bjelland said Monsanto is the largest chemical company in the world. They are the company that produces Roundup herbicide products.
The Barnes County Municipal Airport, located one mile north of Valley City, will be the site for the Wings and Wheels AirShow with gates opening at 10 a.m. Sept. 8.
Terry Gortmaker, who runs the “show and shine” portion of the AirShow, said Thursday performers have now been lined up for the event.
Those who’ve agreed to perform are Matt Younkin, Jim “Fang” Maroney, Warren Pietsch, Rex Hammarback, Toby McPherson and the Fargo Skydivers, Gortmaker said.

BUFFALO, ND — As one of the older members of the Buffalo Sharpshooters, Emily Haag knows exactly what to expect at the Daisy National BB Gun Championship match. Last year, she was there with a team from South Dakota.
“You get a lot more nervous because it’s a lot bigger competition than you’re used to,” Haag said.
But this year, she’s prepared for the trip back and hoping her experience rubs off on a few friends.

60 women participated in the Annual Country Club tournament with funds donated to the Susan G. Komen fund for breast cancer research.

Fort Ransom State Park is celebrating the 29th anniversary of the Fort Ransom Sodbuster Days on Saturday and Sunday, July 14-15. Visitors to the park will take a step back in time and see how North Dakota’s early settlers worked and played.
Just before meeting with the Times-Record Tuesday, Valley City’s new city commissioner Mary Lee Nielson had given a two hour tour to some out-of-towners interested in possibly putting a movie theater in Valley City.
“I got to listen their perspective in not ever seeing the town before. It just renewed my good feelings about Valley City. We have so much to offer. There’s so many amenities in this town,” Nielson said.
