Drew Oberlander, a seventh grader at Valley City Junior High School, shot a hole-in-one Wednesday during a junior high tournament at Bjornson Public Golf Course. Oberlander sunk the shot on the course’s second hole, a par-3, with a 3-wood. He is the 30th golfer to sink an ace since the course opened in 1994. Valley City native Tom Kellogg had a hole-in-one last Thursday on the course’s fourth hole.
Tennis Block Party tonight
The Valley City Tennis Association is celebrating May as National Tennis Month.
VCTA will host its annual Tennis Block Party at the Valley City Rec Center, from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m.
There will be games and prizes for all ages.
A name was omitted from a photo (“A black belt affair”) published in the May 4-6 edition of the Times-Record.
Evan Haglund, a junior black belt, is pictured in the bottom row of the photo. He is second on the left, standing between Drew Jacobson and Sharon Michael.
McBride, Pettit named to A.I.I. first team
In the first inning of their 11-2 loss to West Fargo Tuesday at the Valley City State University softball complex, the girls of the Valley City High School softball team were almost too eager to be taking on the top team in the Eastern Dakota Conference.
From the get-go the Hi-Liners were leaping for liners, diving for shallow flies, but without much luck.
It wasn’t until they settled down that things started working.
“Confidence is all we need to work on,” said Valley City assistant coach Erika Calkins. “We’re starting to get there and we’re starting to improve.”

April Berntson was among the top finishers for Valley City High School at the Packer Relays Friday in West Fargo. Berntson took sixth in the 1,600 as the Hi-Liner girls took 11th of the 13 teams at the meet with five points. The Hi-Liner boys did not score at the meet.
The West Fargo High School softball team is, simply, among the elite softball teams locally.
"They're pretty much undefeated in North Dakota for two years now, at least," Valley City High School coach Jason Lindgren. "I bet they don't have five losses all together in those two years."
It's a record that could strike fear into many opponents, but will be a welcome challenge against the Hi-Liners Tuesday when the teams play a one-point game at 4:30 p.m. at the Valley City State University softball complex.
With plenty of games played in a short time, tournaments have a way of testing teams.
So by the end of the Valley City Junior High Invitational softball tournament, the hosting Hi-Liners were simply drained.
“We played right away at 9 a.m., then we had an hour off,” Valley City coach Lucas Potter said. “After that it was one game we won, another game we won, so by the time that third game hits, what are you going to do?”
