The Catch: Plattner picks the MLB All Star teams, part 1

July 3, 2012

Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game is July 10th and the rosters are set. Each year, comparing my All-Stars with the actual rosters is fun and interesting. No sense in wasting any time. Having not looked at the rosters yet, we’ll begin with my National League All-Star team. After revealing my team, we’ll scope out the real All-Star team, compare and contrast, I’ll defend my picks, and we’ll do the same for the American League (which will be the topic of discussion next week). All stats used are as of games completed through June 30, 2012.

Post 60 places 4th in Leevers Classic

July 1, 2012

July tends to be crunch time for American Legion baseball teams, and the Valley City Post 60 baseball team sees it no differently.
In the next three weeks, Post 60 will only play sectional opponents as it concludes the regular season. The team will then play in the Section 1 tournament starting July 24, and potentially the state tournament, which starts August 1.
With that in mind, the team didn’t stress out too much in its 15-3 loss to Kindred Sunday in the third place game of the Leevers Classic tournament at Charlie Brown Memorial Field.

Local BB gun shooters aim for success at national championship

June 29, 2012

BUFFALO, ND — As one of the older members of the Buffalo Sharpshooters, Emily Haag knows exactly what to expect at the Daisy National BB Gun Championship match. Last year, she was there with a team from South Dakota.
“You get a lot more nervous because it’s a lot bigger competition than you’re used to,” Haag said.
But this year, she’s prepared for the trip back and hoping her experience rubs off on a few friends.

Stricklin’s passion for sports spans generations

June 26, 2012

At 6 feet, 6 inches tall, Ty Buttrey stands well over his grandmother, Valley City’s Jacquette “Ketta” Stricklin.
Side by side, Ketta’s head hardly reaches her grandson’s shoulder.
“He didn’t get the height from me,” she jokes.
His response is more matter-of-fact.
“I got the athletic ability from you,” he quickly responds.
Buttrey, who graduated from high school earlier this month in North Carolina, was ranked by Baseball America as the #38 prospect in the Major League Baseball draft, which took place earlier this month.
