VCHS Girls Outlast Wahpeton in Season Opener

December 10, 2012

For the first game of the season, it had the feel and intensity of a playoff game. Wahpeton guard Lachelle Bumgarner shot the lights out with 38 points, but Valley City didn't back down. Four Hi-Liners scored in double digits as Valley City escaped with a 83-78 road win Saturday afternoon in double overtime.
" It would have been a long week to lose tonight, especially a game like this. This is a huge boost," Valley City coach Jim McDaniel said. "(It was) a very exciting game. I wasn't expecting to go a couple of overtimes."

VCSU Wom Win 8th Straight

December 10, 2012

Special to the Times-Record
The No. 19 Valley City State University womens basketball team's defense was on display Friday as the Vikings beat Trinity Bible College 78-45 in their eighth straight win this season.
Trinity Bible shot the ball well in the first half, jumping out to a 6-0 lead on back-to-back 3-pointers to start the game, while shooting 4-6 from the 3-point line in the first half to keep within reach at halftime.
However, the Vikings turned up the defensive pressure in the second half and forced 26 turnovers in the game and out-rebounded the Lions 46-26.

Shooting Struggles Stifle VCHS Boys

December 10, 2012

The Valley City High School boys basketball team did plenty of things right in its 49-43 season-opening loss to Wahpeton Friday at the Hi-Liner Activity Center, but at times, the ball just didn't seem to want to go in the hoop.
"They rebounded hard, they played defense hard. I thought we outhustled them and we outworked them, but our shooting percentage, we just couldn't overcome that," VCHS coach Scott Hurlimann said, citing a combined 7-20 performance at the free-throw line and 2-18 from the 3-point line. "We have to shoot better."
It was shooting that often seemed contagious.

VCHS Wrestling Loses Home Opener

December 7, 2012

Early on in the Valley City High School wrestling team's 40-34 dual loss to Carrington Thurday night, the Hi-Liners seemed like they would simply run away with it.
The Hi-Liners won five of the first six matches, which started at 145 pounds, all by either pinfall or major decision. But as the night continued, the Cardinals showed why they're one of the top Class B teams, getting pins at the lower weight classes, and clinching the win with a decision at 138 pounds.

Viking Basketball Beats Presentation College

December 7, 2012

After starting the game on a 9-0 run, the Valley City State womens basketball team never fell behind en route to their most convincing victory of the season with, a 90-49 win over Presentation College Thursday at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.
It's the team's first 90-point game since the Vikings beat Minnesota — Morris 93-88 in overtime in the 2010-2011 season.
Though the Saints responded and cut the Viking lead to a two points on two occasions early in the first half, the Vikings controlled the rest of the way.

Loboes Hold Off Maple Valley Boys

December 4, 2012

As the LaMoure/Litchville-Marion boys basketball team worked its offense in the first half of Monday's 56-54 win over Maple Valley, the final result seemed relatively simple.
Pass the ball, set a few picks, wait for a defender to fall off his cover, then take advantage of the hole with a quick cut into the lane for a layup.
"That happens when the offense is moving like its supposed to be," LLM coach Darren Thielges said. "The first half, we were fresh, so we were making good cuts."

NDSU Football Beats SDSU in NCAA 2nd Round

December 3, 2012

FARGO — As the North Dakota State and South Dakota State University football teams took the field for their NCAA FBS second round playoff game Saturday, all expectations were a close one.
Interstate rivalry? Check. Pockets of the stadium lined with loud crowds from either school? Check. When the teams met up just a few weeks ago at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome, the game was decided by a field goal.
But in the rematch, the visiting Jackrabbits seemed to left their lucky foot, or feet, at home.

November 26, 2012

When Valley City State University assistant head football coach and defensive coordinator Gregg Horner found out earlier this year that he had been nominated to received 2012 NAIA Assistant Coach of the Year award, he was humbled but didn't necessarily keep it at the forefront of his mind.
"That, to me, really was the was the end of it," Horner said. "I never really thought that it would go on and I'd end up being named the guy."
Turns out, the nomination from VCSU head coach Dennis McCulloch wasn't the end of it.
