Barnes County Tournament bracket
The Barnes County Girls Basketball Tournament starts Tuesday afternoon at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse on the Valley City State University Campus. Valley City High School, which took 2nd place last year, is the top seed in the tournament and will play No. 8 Barnes County North in the tournament opener at 3 p.m. Maple Valley is the No. 2 seed in the tournament, and LaMoure/Litchville-Marion is No. 4.
The Times-Record will provide scoring updates online throughout the tournament at Facebook.com/VCTimesRecord and Twitter.com/VCTimesRecord.
Because of low participation numbers, the Valley City High School boys basketball program will not field a junior varsity team for the 2013-2014 school year, Dan Larson, the activities director for Valley City Public Schools, announced.
"If everyone stayed out that's currently playing in (grades) 9-11 and eighth grade, we'd have approximately 24 athletes," Larson told the VCPS school board during its regular meeting Monday.
There are plenty of advantages to a home game. Friendly crowd. Familiar surroundings. No sleeping in a hotel.
But when the No. 17 Valley City State University mens basketball team started its season in November, one of the main goals the team had was to be undefeated at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse, not necessarily for those reasons, but because it makes the team’s postseason goals more attainable.
