April 27th, 2012
As far as I can tell, few people are complaining out loud about the early arrival of spring in 2012.
Since 2009 itâs almost felt like weâd skipped a season, or replaced spring with âfloodâ season.
This year, it started to feel like spring in February and March and itâs almost as if fall never left.
Regardless, the early spring has been welcomed by humans, fish and wildlife alike.
The recently stocked trout in the stream near my house were quick learners this year. With a winter short on snow and a spring that only just recently made up a couple of inches against the lingering drought, water levels were low and the fish were instantly wary after the DNR truck dumped them in. It was a different season from the previous two, where high waters allowed me to be a bit more obvious and gave me more room to work in the water column.
There were plenty of emotions on the field for Valley City State Universityâs home finale Wednesday, a double header sweep of Bemidji State (Minn.) University.
There was the joy of the wins â 8-3 in game one, 4-1 in game two â but also plenty of tears shed as the teamâs group of seniors took the field one last time and were given framed jerseys as a keepsake.
When all was said and done, though, it wasnât a bad way to go out.
As the Valley City State University softball team swept a double-header Tuesday against the University of Minnesota - Crookston, there was plenty of excitement over the two wins.
But at times, third baseman Jane Pettit admits she was momentarily caught off guard.
Standing on second base, Pettit would catch a glimpse of the Vikingsâ dugout and find herself getting a bit emotional.
âSometimes you just catch yourself having one of those moments where you just look at them and youâre like âIâm going to miss this,ââ Pettit said.

VCSU football camp deadline Wednesday
By the second inning of the second game of a home double header with Mayville State University Sunday, the Valley City State University softball team had seen plenty of Ashley VandeVeen.
VandeVeen, Mayvilleâs starting pitcher, had already pitched seven innings to the Vikingsâ lineup, six in a 5-1 game one loss and a scoreless first inning.
So in that second inning, the Vikings knew what to expect and entered at-bats looking for a hit from the get-go.
