Gatonye Signs with Viking Basketball

Valley City State men’s basketball coach Jeff Kaminsky announced Monday that Cliff Gatonye of Kenya has signed a letter of intent to attend VCSU and play basketball for the Vikings.

Gatonye, a 6-foot, 6-inch forward and native of Nairobi, Kenya, spent last year at Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount, Minn., where he played in 27 games for the Blue Knights and averaged 6.2 points and 4.2 rebounds on 45.2 percent shooting from the field.

Jared Lentz Shoots an 84 on Day 1 of Class A State Golf Tournament

Hi-Liner junior Jared Lentz, representing Valley City at the Class A State Golf Tournament at Jamestown Country Club, shot a 12-over 84 on Tuesday to enter a seven-way tie for 39th entering Wednesday’s Day 2.

Lentz stands tied with Bismarck Century senior Austin Schauer, Fargo Davies senior Bryan Pallen and sophomore Talon Johnson, Bismarck St. Mary’s Central 7th-grader Cole Herbel, Grand Forks Red River freshman Keaton Wolf and Fargo North sophomore Tucker Lehr.

Brady Anderson All-America Honorable Mention

Valley City State sophomore Brady Anderson is a 2014 NAIA Baseball All-America Honorable Mention, the NAIA national office announced Monday.

A catcher, infielder and Jamestown, N.D. native, Anderson was voted Player of the Year in the North Star Athletic Association after batting .443 with 38 RBIs, 23 extra-base hits and a .678 slugging percentage.

Diegel and Diegel Make Softball All-State Team

Hi-Liner senior pitcher/first base Danica Diegel and senior catcher Dierra Diegel have received North Dakota Class A Softball All-State Team recognition, as voted upon by coaches.

Valley City put forth 11-5 Eastern Dakota Conference and 20-11 overall records to carry the No. 3 seed into Regionals, where they came just short of a second-straight State Tournament appearance with a late 2-1 Qualifier loss to No. 4 Fargo Shanley in Fargo, N.D.

Valley City entered the season ranked No. 2 in the EDC and fifth in Class A.

Nelson's Single Completes Valley City Babe Ruth's Sweep

It took all five innings of Tuesday’s late game for Valley City Babe Ruth to sweep LaMoure at Charlie Brown Field, but Bryce Nelson’s walk-off single capped an 11-10 comeback after Nate Rodriguez’s one-hitter in the 12-2 five-inning opener.

“Games like these make you old quick,” said head coach Lance Lukes of the second game, in which Valley City gave up leads of 5-1 and 6-2.

Valley City State High School Football Camps Underway

Valley City State football began its annual high school team camps on Sunday, and the programs continue through Saturday.

VCSU expects more than 600 student-athletes and coaches on campus this week, from 27 different 9-Man and 11-Man teams.

Nine-Man Team Camp runs Sunday through Tuesday and is expected to include 13 teams. Eleven-Man Team Camp runs Thursday through Saturday and will feature 14 different teams.

Each camp’s final day features team scrimmages, and both camps conclude with an Overtime Challenge at 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Saturday.

Megan Johnson Wins Class B State Long Jump, Triple Jump

Enderlin-Maple Valley senior Megan Johnson won the Class B State Long Jump title at 18 feet and the Triple Jump crown at 37 feet, 6.50 inches May 23-24 in Bismarck, N.D., to which Barnes County North and LaMoure/Litchville-Marion competitors also qualified.

Kost, Carlson, Ulmer, Gibson Join Viking Volleyball in 2014

New Valley City State volleyball coach Adam Longmore announced on Thursday that Jenna Kost of Casselton, N.D., Courtney Carlson of LaMoure, N.D., Tanys Ulmer of Marion, N.D., and Billie Gibson of Blackfoot, Idaho have all committed to attend VCSU and play volleyball for the Vikings this fall.

Allyson Suhr Returns to Valley City State

Allyson Suhr, Valley City State women’s basketball’s latest addition, is a familiar face for local fans.

Viking women’s basketball coach Jill DeVries announced Thursday that Valley City native Allyson Suhr has signed a letter of intent to attend Valley City State and play for the Vikings this fall.

Suhr, a 2012 Hi-Liner graduate, played the last two seasons at North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, N.D.
