Elementary Runners Make the Grade

Valley City 4th-, 5th- and 6th- grade harriers raced in sunny mid-70s conditions on Tuesday at Chautauqua Park's 1-mile course in the Elementary Cross Country Meet, put on by Valley City Parks & Recreation and the Valley City Cross Country team.

No. 8 Hi-Liner Tennis (1-7 Eastern Dakota Conference, 1-9 overall) faced No. 9 Wahpeton (0-7, 0-10) on a gusty Monday night in a duel for the eighth and final Eastern Dakota Conference Regional Tournament.

Valley City Girls' Golf teed off in the 11-team East Region Meet at Grand Forks County Club on Monday, from which the top seven teams advance to the State Tournament Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.

Nudell, Maple Valley Kill at Valley City Optimist Tournament

Maple Valley volleyball beat LaMoure/Litchville-Marion 2-0 (25-14, 25-22), smashed Glen Ullin 2-0 (25-10, 25-12) and outmatched Oakes 2-0 (27-25, 25-17) in pool play at the Valley City Optimist Tourney on Saturday.

The Raiders fell to Valley City, however, in a very close 2-0 (21-25, 22-25) tournament match.

Abbie Tinjum served eight aces in the tournament, Rylee Nudell six, Megan Kasowski five and Ashley Punton two.

Tinjum dished out 36 assists, Katie Pautz 19, Kasowski three, Lexi Berntson two, Nudell, Kaylee Hanson, Punton and Kara Smith one each.

Hi-Liner XC Hosts Blue and White Invite

Hi-Liner Cross Country hosted the Bill Jansen Blue and White Invite at Bjornson Golf Course on Saturday, an event in which 50 North Dakota teams and over 1,200 runners raced for the crown.

"As this is a State year for the Hi-Liners, teams from all over the state came to Valley City to experience the State Meet course," Valley City Cross Country Coach Brian Engelhard said. "Bismarck High won the Boys' Varsity division, and Century won the Girls' Varsity. The competition was extremely tough, as the best from Class A and B were running together."

Service Master Atop Hi-Lo Bowling League

Valley City's Hi-Lo Bowling League returned to competition on Sept. 17.

Service Master won four games against Sky Lanes, Bank Forward took four games from Leevers Foods, 20-20 Auto Center went 3-1 against J & S Ladies, and Valley Lumber finished 3-1 against Chrissy Faye Photography.

20-20 Auto Center had the team high score with 798 pins. Bank Forward had the team high across four games with 2287.

Mary Berntson was the single-game individual high scorer with 221. Kandice Nelson was the individual high scorer with 536.

Hi-Liner Volleyball Takes 3rd at Optimist Tournament

Hi-Liner volleyball hosted the Optimist Tournament on Saturday, beating Carrington for third place after a loss to LaMoure in tournament play.

A breezy night at Lokken Stadium became a bitter chill for Trinity Bible College (1-2) as Derek Elliott of Valley City State (2-1) ran for 193 yards and a record five touchdowns to become the Vikings' career and single-game rushing touchdown leader en route to a 66-6 win.

Hi-Liner 9th-Grade White and Blue Volleyball faced Fargo South on Thursday night.

Blue lost a very close 2-0 (24-26, 20-25, 12-15) match to the Bruins, but played a third set anyway.
