Riley Miller Wins, Boys Tennis Loses at Fargo South

September 19, 2014

Freshman Riley Miller defeated Fargo South junior Owen Duncan, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4, on the road Thursday, an 8-1 Hi-Liner loss, in Valley City’s final league tuneup before a do-or-die Regional match.

“We finished eighth in the EDC [1-7 EDC, 1-9 overall], which means that we will host the play-in match this coming Monday at 4:30 p.m. against Wahpeton [0-8 EDC, 0-10 overall],” Hi-Liner head coach Matt Nielson said. “Winner’s team season continues on Thursday at Regionals. Loser’s team season is done, but top seven will still play the individual tournament next Friday and Saturday in Grand Forks.”

BIG BLUE HEART: Hi-Liners Give Up 2-Set Lead, Hold off Huskies in Lightning Round

September 19, 2014

Name something that Hi-Liner volleyball has plenty of.

Wahpeton’s two-set comeback made it a family feud on Thursday’s Parents Night at the Hi-Liner Activities Center, but the fifth-set survey said ‘heart’ as Valley City never trailed for the 15-10 win and the 3-2 (25-10, 25-9, 22-25, 19-25, 15-10) match to avoid becoming the Huskies’ first Eastern Dakota Conference victims.

Valley City led 9-2 in the opening set for the 25-10 edge, and 10-1 in the second on the way to a 25-9 count.

Boys Tennis Making a Racket

September 17, 2014

Hi-Liner boys tennis is getting better, just in time for Sept. 25’s Regionals in Grand Forks.

Dalton Ondracek and Brandon Miller won their first No. 1 Doubles match at the West Fargo Invite on Sept. 13, splitting sets in the match to get to the semifinals, which would have guaranteed them fourth, but fell in the super tie-breaker. Ondracek and Miller won two matches on the consolation side and played to seven-all in the fifth-place match, an eight-game pro-set, but South proved too much and won, 9-7.

SNAPPED: Wahpeton Sticks Hi-Liner Junior Varsity with 1st Loss in 3 Years

September 16, 2014

When all else fails, throw it to Levi Nix.

Nix, the 6-foot, 4-inch sophomore quarterback, climbed the ladder, split two defenders at the 15-yard line and danced into the end zone in Wahpeton on Monday night, but Husky 5-foot, 9-inch sophomore quarterback Tyler Breuer and all his rowdy friends handed the junior varsity Hi-Liners their first loss in three years, 42-6.

“I don’t think they were that much better than us,” Hi-Liner coach Jim Breckheimer said. “But the wheels fell off.”

“They took us out of our gameplan,” Valley City coach Ty Allen said.

FOOTBALL: Grafton's Stand Cuts Hi-Liners Short

September 14, 2014

Power running met air attacks as Nate Rodriguez and AA No. 5 Valley City opened East Region action on the road against Zak Hernandez and Grafton on Friday, but defense made the difference in the end.

Up 20-14 late in the fourth quarter, Grafton held on a goal line stand for the upset.

Eli Allen’s five-yard first quarter touchdown run completed a 70-yard drive. Hernandez’s two-yard run tied it at 6-6, but Rodriguez’s rushing touchdown and Cody Halverson’s two-point catch in the second quarter put Valley City up 14-6.
