As Mari Milender prepared for her first USA Gymnastics Level 9 meet last winter, she took a minute to soak it all in.
âI started in the USAG program late so Iâve always been behind some of the girls that were younger than me,â said Milender, a senior at Valley City High School. âThe first Level 9 meet, I remember getting ready to step on the floor, Iâm like âWow. Iâm with the big dogs now. I can say Iâm a decent, good gymnast.â
âJust that realization is great after youâve worked so hard for that, it feels so good.â
The morning of his interview for the open Valley City State University cross country and track and field coach position, Ken Frenette woke up about six in the morning and took a jog.
He went around Valley City and gave him a chance to check out the campus. He instantly got a good feeling.
âIt seems like a pretty special place,â Frenette said.
Frenette was named the head coach of the teams Dec. 23 and will start working with the track teams next week.

JAMESTOWN â There's no question about what's ailing the Valley City High School boys basketball team.
"Our offense," junior forward Chase Carpenter said. "We just can't score.
"We're taking bad shots, forcing the ball into the post, just not doing anything great."
The Hi-Liners lost 58-45 Thursday at Jamestown High School. It was the fifth loss in a row.
Similar to the team's loss to West Fargo earlier this month, it wasn't necessarily bad play that lost the game. The shots simply weren't falling.
The Hi-Liners finished the game 18-45 from the field with no 3-pointers.
JAMESTOWN â Valley City High School girls basketball coach Jim McDaniel had a hard time pin pointing exactly what was off with his team in Thursday's 62-46 loss to Jamestown.
Unlike the boys, who simply couldn't make shots, the girls struggled to overcome a concoction of turnovers, missed shots and early offensive success from their opponents.
"We were just kind of out of our game, out of synch right from the start," McDaniel said. "We just couldn't get anything going at all."

Note: The original story read that Larson wanted to be the first VCHS wrestler to go undefeated in a season. Since publication, it has been verified that Larson would not the be the first to finish undefeated. This version of the story has been updated to reflect that.
At the beginning of the year, Valley City High School wrestler Brandon Larson set the bar high.
He wants to be the join the short list of wrestlers in school history to finish a season undefeated.
"It was just my goal at the beginning of the season to be the first person from Valley City to ever do that," Larson said.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) â The athletic abilities of star running back Adrian Peterson led the Minnesota Vikings to give him a seven-year, $100 million contract extension before the season started.
Now, they hope his recuperative abilities are just as good and he is able to live up to being the highest-paid running back in the NFL.
Minnesota expects Peterson to be recovered from left knee surgery for two torn ligaments in time to start the 2012 season.
The Valley City State University mens basketball team had a largely traditional practice Monday when it returned from its short holiday break.
But as the team worked its offense, there was one subtle change â rather than running the shot clock at 35 seconds, the Vikings were working the ball with only 24.
It was a strategic move to help prepare the team for the Wesmen Classic tournament, which starts Wednesday at the University of Winnipeg in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
