Valley City State senior third base Liz Hall-Sewell is the North Star Athletic Association Softball Player of the Week, the NSAA announced Monday.
Hall Sewell, of North Pole, Alaska, completed her Viking career on 5-for-7 batting with a double and a pair of two-run home runs in Valley City Stateâ€™s three-game North Star/Frontier Conference Postseason Tournament stretch. Hall Sewell drove in four runs, drew four walks and batted .714 with a slugging percentage of 1.714 in the tournament.
Hi-Liner track and field set 20 new personal bests and placed in three events at Fridayâ€™s Packer Relays Invitational in West Fargo.
â€śIt was a good meet for a lot of kids,â€ť Valley City head coach Trevor Bakalar said. â€śI knew we had a few [personal bests], but I didnâ€™t think so many. The older kids were gone for the New York Trip, so we went with sophomores and juniors. Itâ€™s a real indication of where we may fit for Regionals [May 17 at Cushman Field in Grand Forks, N.D.]: where can we get personal bests, where can they best qualify, and where can they help us out the most?â€ť
Valley City State softball, the No. 2 seed and North Star Athletic Association champion, opened the North Star/Frontier Conference Postseason Tournament in Jamestown with Fridayâ€™s 13-9 win over No. 5 Presentation and Friday afternoonâ€™s 3-0 loss to No. 4 Great Falls (Mont.) before falling 3-2 in Saturdayâ€™s elimination game to No. 6 Dakota State.

No. 3 seed Viking baseballâ€™s North Star-Frontier Conference Baseball Tournament run came to an end with Sundayâ€™s 8-2 loss to No. 5 Dickinson State that followed Saturdayâ€™s 20-3 loss to No. 2 Mayville State and Friday nightâ€™s 11th-inning 8-7 walkoff win against No. 4 Dakota State.

Hi-Liner junior Jared Lentz tied for sixth place with an 82 and Valley City took seventh with a 363 at Thursdayâ€™s 10-team Eastern Dakota Conference meet at Grand Forks Country Club.
Valley City sophomore Collin Hoss shot a 92, freshman Levi Nix a 93, freshman Drew Oberlander a 96, senior Dustin Miller a 97 and junior Ian Schweitzer a 102.
West Fargo finished first with a 319, and Packer freshman Cole Johnson took first in individual competition at 76.
Valley City State menâ€™s basketball has added a sure-handed point guard to its 2014 recruiting class.
Viking head coach Jeff Kaminsky announced Wednesday that Alex Quist, a 5-foot-11-inch point guard from Western Dakota Association champion Bismarck Century High School, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for the Vikings and attend classes at VCSU this fall.

Valley City State sophomore Jenna Coghlan is the North Star Athletic Association Womenâ€™s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week, senior Jordan Aus is the Menâ€™s Outdoor Co-Field Athlete of the Week, and senior Philip Reuer is the Menâ€™s Outdoor Co-Track Athlete of the Week after stellar performances at Saturdayâ€™s Al Cassel Relays in Valley City.
Coghlan, of Valley City, was the top NAIA finisher in the Womenâ€™s Javelin Throw with a second-place toss of 35.10 meters (115 feet, 2 inches).
Valley City State track and field won three events and took second place in four more in Saturday's Al Cassel Relays in Valley City.
Viking sophomore Malik Jackson took first at 4:23.47 in the 1,500m Run, and senior Wayne Engelhard second at 4:24.32.
Freshman Josh Avila won the 3,000m Run at 10:09.05. Freshman Alex Askerooth took third at 10:44.31.
Senior Jordan Aus took home the Javelin title with a personal-best throw of 51.30 meters (168 feet, 3.68 inches).
Senior Philip Reuer took second in both the 100m Dash (11.31) and 200m Dash (22.77).
Hi-Liner girls tennis opened May with Thursdayâ€™s bright and sunny 6-3 Eastern Dakota Conference home win against Fargo Davies, a team eager to return the favor from last yearâ€™s outcome.
Babe Ruth baseball will host a registration and information meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the basement of the American Legion Club for parents and players interested in playing 14- & 15-Year Old Baseball this summer.
