Thereâ€™s snow on the ground and a crisp in the air, but Valley
City State softball is thinking spring.
VCSU opens the 2014 season this week with six dome games in St. Paul, Minn. Head coach Elle Frackerâ€™s team plays three games Tuesday against Bemidji State University (Minn.), rival Jamestown and Sioux Falls (S.D.). The Vikings play another three games Wednesday against Wisconsin-Superior, Crown College (Minn.) and Bemidji State.

LaMoure/Litchville-Marion girls basketball defeated Strasburg-Zeeland 69-21 on the road on Saturday night and begins the District 5 Tournament at 1 p.m. Saturday in Ellendale, N.D. against the winner of Friday's No. 4 Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier and No. 5 Barnes County North matchup.
Lady Loboes senior forward Tasha Piehl, 8th-grade guard/forward Anna Holen and junior guard/forward Kennedy Witt spurred LaMoure/Litchville-Marion with 12 points each. Witt sank four three-pointers in the evening, Piehl three more and Holen another.
Barnes County North girls hoops defeated Midkota/Kensal 54-49 at home on Thursday night for their second straight win before falling 55-48 to Oakes on Friday night.
Bison junior center Kayla Scott led Barnes County North with 11 points against Midkota/Kensal, sophomore guard Sam Wieland with 10.
Midkota/Kensal freshman guard/forward Jade Boote powered her squad with 12 points, junior guard/forward Brooke Ronningen 11 of her own.
Valley City State sophomore shortstop Katarina Boychuk, junior outfielder/catcher Savannah McMillin and senior third base Liz Hall-Sewell were all announced as preseason all-conference selections on Feb. 14.
VCSU, expected to finish second in the North Star Athletic Conference, open the season on Wednesday and Thursday with five indoor games in St. Paul, Minn.
Valley City State menâ€™s hoops sent senior guard Aaron Duske out in style as he scored 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds in Saturdayâ€™s 70-58 Senior Night win over Presentation College.

Valley City State senior forward Brittany Lehner scored 18 points to reach double figures for the 21st time in 24 games this season as the Vikings beat Presentation College on Saturdayâ€™s Senior Night for the third North Star Athletic Association Postseason Tournament seed and the right to face rival No. 2 University of Jamestown (7-1 NSAA, 25-2 overall) in the semifinals, 3 p.m. Sunday at the Jamestown Civic Center.

Valley City State's menâ€™s and womenâ€™s track and field enjoyed a great end to the 2014 indoor season at Thursday's Bemidji State University (Minn.) Beaver Twilight.
Both teams put up some great performances, but freshman Alicia VanSweringen set a new school record in the 60-meter high hurdles for the third time this season with a time of 10.45 seconds. VanSweringen's record is almost a second faster than the previous record she set two weeks ago. Not only did she run well for the program and herself, but her time earned a fifth-place finish.
Valley City State University head football coach Dennis McCulloch announced Feb. 14 that Maple Valley/Enderlin senior defensive end Dylan Claus is among six additional high school seniors who have signed letters of intent to attend classes at VCSU and play football for the Vikings this fall.
The new additions include two players from North Dakota, two from Arizona, and one from both California and Hawaii.
North Star Athletic Association commissioner Cory Anderson announced that Waldorf College (Iowa) will join the NSAA football conference beginning in fall 2014.
"It is with great pleasure that we add a seventh team to our football membership," Commissioner Anderson said. "The inclusion of Waldorf will jumpstart our league into new territory, allowing us to magnify our brand in the NAIA."
Waldorf, located in Forest City, Iowa, was previously of the Mid-States Football Association. The Warriors reside in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC) in other sports.
