Viking junior catcher/outfielder Savannah McMillin’s walk-off single late Wednesday helped Valley City State sweep Mayville State, 3-1 and 2-1, in a North Star doubleheader at Shelly Ellig Field.
“We had to learn to be patiently aggressive — that was the word of the day,” Viking senior third base Liz Hall Sewell said. “We needed to play solid defense, and once we got on base we came through. For two freshman pitchers to come in, it really showed their mound presence.”
Freshman right-handers Ashley Metcalf and Morgan Nalley picked up complete-game wins.
Viking baseball and Jamestown's Tuesday doubleheader at neutral Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. featured a 14-6 slugfest and a 3-0 pitcher's duel, from both of which the Jimmies came away the victors.
Valley City State is now 3-3 in North Star Athletic Association action and 12-21 overall. The Vikings plan to host Dakota State in a 4 p.m. Friday home opener.

Friday’s Eastern Dakota Conference Indoor Championships at North Dakota State were a promising display of Hi-Liner athleticism.
“Setting 12 new personal records at the EDC Indoor was a reputable way to end the indoor season,” Hi-Liner head coach Trevor Bakalar said.
“Bekah Peterson had another good meet and continues to look strong as we move to our outdoor season. Bekah placed fifth in her first 400m run of the season and set a new personal record with a time of 1:08.22. In the Triple Jump her distance of 31 feet, 3.5 inches placed her seventh.”
