Valley City Babe Ruthâ€™s older contingent swept Linton 11-0 and 11-1 in Fridayâ€™s District road games before seven runs in the fourth inning lifted the younger bunch to an 8-7 Fifth-Place Game comeback at the Enderlin Tournament on Saturday.
Babe Ruthâ€™s junior coalition found themselves in Saturdayâ€™s Fifth-Place Game after falling 7-3 to Enderlin and 11-1 to Northern Cass in Fridayâ€™s Pool B action at Enderlinâ€™s Hendrickson Field, â€śThe Palace on the Prairie.â€ť
Tony Piccalo is a new Valley City State assistant football coach, Viking head coach Dennis McCulloch announced Thursday.
Piccalo, a 2002 Valley City State graduate, was Cocoa Beach High School (Fla.)â€™s head coach for the last nine years. From 1998-2001, Piccaloâ€™s undergraduate years, Piccalo was a Viking student assistant coach.
â€śI had an outstanding time during my four years at VCSU,â€ť Piccalo said. â€śWe had the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, and I really grew as a coach. The university and community have been a big part of my life.â€ť

The Valley City State University Booster Board will host the 18-hole Viking Golf Scramble, one of the athletic departmentâ€™s major annual scholarship fundraisers, which takes place Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Valley City Town and Country Club and Bjornson Park.
Hole contests with prizes, and Hole-in-One contests sponsored by Miller Motors and Farmers Union, can be won throughout. All participants will receive entry prizes and dinner.

Valley City Babe Ruth beat Lisbon twice on the road Thursday night, coming back from a 9-5 fourth-inning deficit for a nine-inning 12-9 District win and surviving a three-run third frame in the 6-3 non-District finisher.
â€śWe didnâ€™t come out playing our best,â€ť Valley City head coach Lance Lukes said. â€śWe were just kind of going through the motions and not putting anything really into it. We left too many runners on base and didnâ€™t execute some of the little things that we need to be doing.â€ť
Valley City led 2-0 after two District innings on Justin Mansonâ€™s inside-
Drew Oberlanderâ€™s third-inning single had Valley City Babe Ruth up 3-2 in Sundayâ€™s Pizza Corner Classic championship, but Carringtonâ€™s two-run single in the fourth sparked an 8-4 trophy triumph.
â€śWe didnâ€™t play our best baseball and, when youâ€™re playing a good team like Carrington, if you donâ€™t play well, you wonâ€™t beat a good team,â€ť Valley City head coach Lance Lukes said. â€śWe made too many mistakes
out there: fielding errors, throwing errors, pitching errors, and Carrington, being the good team they are, took advantage of them.â€ť

Chase Carpenter allowed only three hits through seven innings and Jake Miller struck down runner after runner at the plate Thursday night, but Devils Lake scored three runs on two seventh-inning Legion Post 60 errors to turn a 1-0 lead into a 4-0 District win.
Devils Lake continued in the non-District follow-up for a 12-3 margin.
