VCSU's 6 seniors prepared for final stretch of college careers

April 25, 2012

As the Valley City State University softball team swept a double-header Tuesday against the University of Minnesota - Crookston, there was plenty of excitement over the two wins.
But at times, third baseman Jane Pettit admits she was momentarily caught off guard.
Standing on second base, Pettit would catch a glimpse of the Vikings’ dugout and find herself getting a bit emotional.
“Sometimes you just catch yourself having one of those moments where you just look at them and you’re like ‘I’m going to miss this,’” Pettit said.

Locked in: Big 2nd inning leads Valley City State past Mayville

April 23, 2012

By the second inning of the second game of a home double header with Mayville State University Sunday, the Valley City State University softball team had seen plenty of Ashley VandeVeen.
VandeVeen, Mayville’s starting pitcher, had already pitched seven innings to the Vikings’ lineup, six in a 5-1 game one loss and a scoreless first inning.
So in that second inning, the Vikings knew what to expect and entered at-bats looking for a hit from the get-go.

VC's Johnson competing at regional gymnastics meet

April 20, 2012

As a lifelong gymnast, Valley City’s Taylor Johnson is no stranger to pulling off a routine.
But entering this weekend, the USA Gymnastics Level 8 athlete had a few butterflies.
Rather than a small competition at one of the numerous gyms around North Dakota, she’ll be taking the floor at the Minneapolis Convention Center for the USAG Region 4 Championships.
“I’m probably just going to get a good experience out of it,” Johnson, 13, said. “It’d be cool if I placed.”
It’s a trip that only a handful of members of the Valley Twisters have ever taken.

Griggs county students help Dakota Wizards beat bullying

April 20, 2012

Special to the Times-Record
Bismarck’s Dakota Wizards basketball team, a developmental league team for the Golden State Warriors, has taken on a new opponent, bullying.
Earlier this month, the Wizards invited Griggs County Central students to their final home game to assist in their game plan to send out the message “stop bullying now.”
At the game, students took a pledge to treat people fairly, be inclusive and take action when bullying is happening to others. Additionally, the team highlighted a new North Dakota’s new anti-bullying law, “Cassidy’s Law”, which goes in effect this July.
