VCSU women keep win streak alive at Dakota State, men lose to Sioux Falls

January 9, 2012

The Valley City State University womens basketball team picked up a big A.I.I. win on the road, beating Dakota State by a 68-52 Sunday.
Three Vikings scored in double figures, led by junior Katelyn Ralston who posted a game high 15 points on 7-12 shooting from the floor. Fellow junior Courtney Titus and sophomore Brittany Lehner tallied 11 points each for the Vikings.
The Viking defense held the Lady T’s to just 30.9 percent shooting from the floor and only 21 percent in the first half. The Vikings also forced 16 turnovers and coverted them into 18 points.

BCN boys lose at last second

January 6, 2012

WIMBLEDON — The Barnes County North boys basketball team lost 50-49 to New Rockford-Sheyenne Thursday at home, and in dramatic fashion no less.
With the clock counting the final seconds in the fourth quarter, Rocket forward Chance LaBrie got a chance for a lay up in the paint and hit it with one second left.
While the loss stung, BCN coach Stacy Schaffer was pleased with his team's effort.
Other than a small offensive lull in the second quarter, the Bison played a close game against a similar opponent and nearly came out with the win.

BCN girls lose to New Rockford-Sheyenne

January 6, 2012

WIMBLEDON — It's often said that good defense in basketball can lead to good offense.
Thursday at home against New Rockford-Sheyenne, the Barnes County North girls basketball team learned that the hard way losing 64-28.
From the moment the Bison first touched the ball, the Rockets shut them down with a man-to-man pressure defense that never let up.
"That was one thing we've struggled with this year is a full-court man," BCN coach Randy Hooey said. "The ball pressure absolutely took us out of the game,"

North Dakota Outdoors: Surveys provide valuable information

January 6, 2012

After a couple of cups of coffee and the usual bantering about weather at my favorite corner convenience store, a recent discussion turned to Game and Fish Department surveys.
Not the kind for which biologists annually count deer or ducks, but the kind that just about every hunter or angler receives from time to time, asking questions about harvests and days afield.

'Up for the Challenge': Mari Milender hoping gymnastics career ends with national berth

January 5, 2012

As Mari Milender prepared for her first USA Gymnastics Level 9 meet last winter, she took a minute to soak it all in.
“I started in the USAG program late so I’ve always been behind some of the girls that were younger than me,” said Milender, a senior at Valley City High School. “The first Level 9 meet, I remember getting ready to step on the floor, I’m like ‘Wow. I’m with the big dogs now. I can say I’m a decent, good gymnast.’
“Just that realization is great after you’ve worked so hard for that, it feels so good.”

VCSU coach Frenette ready to run; baseball signs two, Milligen honored by A.I.I.

January 5, 2012

The morning of his interview for the open Valley City State University cross country and track and field coach position, Ken Frenette woke up about six in the morning and took a jog.
He went around Valley City and gave him a chance to check out the campus. He instantly got a good feeling.
“It seems like a pretty special place,” Frenette said.
Frenette was named the head coach of the teams Dec. 23 and will start working with the track teams next week.

Hi-Liners bring defense, but can't sink shots in loss to Jamestown

December 30, 2011

JAMESTOWN — There's no question about what's ailing the Valley City High School boys basketball team.
"Our offense," junior forward Chase Carpenter said. "We just can't score.
"We're taking bad shots, forcing the ball into the post, just not doing anything great."
The Hi-Liners lost 58-45 Thursday at Jamestown High School. It was the fifth loss in a row.
Similar to the team's loss to West Fargo earlier this month, it wasn't necessarily bad play that lost the game. The shots simply weren't falling.
The Hi-Liners finished the game 18-45 from the field with no 3-pointers.

VCHS girls struggle all around in loss to Jamestown

December 30, 2011

JAMESTOWN — Valley City High School girls basketball coach Jim McDaniel had a hard time pin pointing exactly what was off with his team in Thursday's 62-46 loss to Jamestown.
Unlike the boys, who simply couldn't make shots, the girls struggled to overcome a concoction of turnovers, missed shots and early offensive success from their opponents.
"We were just kind of out of our game, out of synch right from the start," McDaniel said. "We just couldn't get anything going at all."
