16 PRs at Fargo South Classic

Hi-Liner track and field set 16 new personal records at Friday’s Fargo South Classic Invite, from which the boys team took fifth of five teams with 41 points.

New personal records include:

Sophomore John Halgrimson’s 19-foot, 4-inch Long Jump for second place and eight points

Junior Ashley Durheim’s 74.96 seconds in the 400-meter Dash for 11th and six team points

Freshman Caleb Reign’s 45-foot, 2-inch Discus Throw and 77-foot, 3-inch Javelin Throw

Freshman Hunter Olstad’s 45-foot, 1-inch Javelin Throw

Sophomore Lucas Jury’s 25.98 seconds in the 200-meter Dash

Girls Tennis Takes Doubleheader, 7th at WF

Hi-Liner girls tennis won a home doubleheader against Grand Forks Central and Fargo Shanley on Friday, then tied for seventh at the 16-team East/West Invitational in West Fargo, N.D.

Hi-Liner Fastpitch Slays Grand Forks Central

Hi-Liner softball, having struggled to capitalize in recent games, scrambled the batting order and won both of Friday’s games at Grand Forks Central, taking the first contest 13-3 and the second 15-4.

“We flip-flopped No. 2 through No. 7 in the batting order,” Valley City head coach Jason Lindgren said. “They’ve been in same spots for years, and maybe some got comfortable. We hit better, and we’ll find out early this week how our newfangled lineup works against Fargo North and West Fargo.”

Hometown Vikings Win 4 Events at NSAA Invite

Valley City State sophomore Jessica Meland won the Women’s Shot Put and the Women’s Hammer Throw, sophomore Jenna Coghlan the Women’s Javelin Throw and senior Wayne Engelhard the Men’s 1,500-meter Run as the Vikings hosted Friday’s North Star Athletic Association Invitational against Jamestown, Dickinson State and Dakota State.

Meland’s toss of 12.12 meters (39 feet, 9.25 inches) earned her the Shot Put crown before she took the top Hammer Throw spot at 50.08 meters (164 feet, 4 inches).

Boomer’s Wins Co-Ed Volleyball Championship

Boomer’s Corner Keg is your Valley City Parks & Recreation Co-Ed Volleyball League champion after finishing the regular season 10-0 for a first-round bye, defeating Centrol 2-1 (25-12, 20-25, 15-8) and taking down Service Master, 2-0 (25-21, 25-19) in the championship.

DeVries Returns as Vikings Coach

Jill DeVries, previously the Valley City State women’s basketball coach of 14 years before stepping down last June, is the coach once again, athletic director Jack Denholm announced on Tuesday.

DeVries replaces Cathy Hanek, who resigned after one season.

Kaminsky NSAA Coach of Character

Valley City State men’s head basketball coach Jeff Kaminsky is the North Star Athletic Association Coach of Character, an award bestowed upon a head coach outstanding in embracing the five core values of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Champions of Character Initiative — integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership — and using methods of teaching character through sport, and in community leadership through volunteering or service, the NAIA announced.

Denholm to Waldorf, Diegel to Northern

Valley City seniors Jessica Denholm and Dierra Diegel announced their college intentions on Thursday at the Hi-Liner Activities Center, where Denholm signed a letter of intent to advance her volleyball career as a setter at Waldorf College and Diegel signed to play basketball as a forward at Northern State University.

Hi-Liner Boys Golf Shoots Season-Bests

All six Hi-Liners carded season-best rounds Wednesday at CrossRoads Golf Course in Carrington, N.D., as junior Jared Lentz’s sixth-place 76 led Valley City to seventh for four points at 330.

“Conditions were maybe the best we have had all year, which is hard to believe, as they played 18 holes in the drizzle and rain today,” Hi-Liner head coach Buff Murray said. “No wind was a big plus for the first tournament this year.”

Senior Dustin Miller shot an 83, freshman Drew Oberlander an 85, sophomore Collin Hoss an 86, freshman Levi Nix an 88, and junior Ian
Schweitzer a 90.

Brady Anderson NSAA Baseball Player of the Year

Viking sophomore Brady Anderson is the North Star Athletic Association Baseball Player of the Year and is one of six Vikings to receive postseason honors, the NSAA announced Monday at the conclusion of the conference tournament.

Anderson led the North Star with a .443 batting average, picked up 23 extra-base hits and hit three home runs, drove in 38 runs and led the Vikings with a .506 on-base percentage and a .678 slugging percentage. Anderson was also named the NAIA National Player of the Week on April 1, and is All-Conference as a utility.
