Raising the bar: Viland aims for record breaking senior season

April 16, 2012

Valley City High School senior Paul Viland only has a certain amount of focus on the state track and field meet this early in the season.
He’ll likely make the cut sooner or later.
Instead, the pole vaulter has a number on his mind — 13 feet, 4 inches.
“That will break the school record by an inch,” he said.
It’s the ultimate goal for the senior, who picked up pole vaulting in middle school and is continually breaking his personal best in the event.

Sporadic pitching problems hurt VCSU in sweep to NSU

April 12, 2012

With a big four-game series against Jamestown coming up this weekend, the Valley City State University baseball team used a different pitching strategy than it normally would in a double header sweep to NCAA Division II Northern (S.D.) State University.
Instead of starting one guy and keeping him in as long as possible, the team constantly rotated pitchers, splitting the 14 total innings amongst 10 different pitchers. None stayed in longer than two innings.

Going the distance: Distance runners bring depth, experience to VCHS track

April 11, 2012

When Valley City High School runner Ruth Ihry started with the school’s track and field team, she wasn’t much for distance.
“She used to be a sprinter,” her teammate, Allyson Suhr, said with a friendly, if not slightly accusatory tone. “We converted her.”
Asked why, Ihry thinks for a minute.
“All my friends,” Ihry said.
Now, Ihry has become one of the numerous distance runners on a team that has plenty of depth in the area.

Valley Twisters do well at state

April 11, 2012

The Valley Twisters gymnastics team improved on an already great season earlier this month at the USA Gymnastics state championships in Bismarck.
Over 200 gymnasts from all across the state competed in the three-day meet.
The team was lead by Taylor Johnson, a Level 8 gymnast, who rejoined the Twisters after her first season in high school gymnastics. She placed second on the floor with a 9.225 and took third in the beam. She also placed sixth on the bars and eighth on the vault. Her all around score of 34.150 was good for sixth place and also qualified her for the 2012

Valley Twisters start search for new coach

April 10, 2012

The Valley Twisters gymnastics club has started the search for a new head coach and executive director deciding to part ways with Jon Liardi Monday night.
"The long-term best interest, with respect to safety of students and growth of program, wasn't to have him on board as a coach and director," President Bobby Koepplin said Tuesday.
Liardi said he was asked Wednesday morning to turn in a letter of resignation, though he was unsure whether he would.

Lack of depth hurting Hi-Liner baseball team

April 10, 2012

JAMESTOWN — Suffice to say, the Valley City baseball team hasn’t had the smoothest start to its season.
For one, the team currently has a handful of ineligible players, leaving only nine players to fill out the roster.
The result is nine guys, some playing out of position, who are forced to take all the at-bats, pitch all the innings and hold down the fort until some of the missing pieces are eligible later this month.

NDSU football scrimmage marks halfway point in spring season

April 10, 2012

FARGO, N.D.--Linebacker Grant Olson had a pick six and running back Matt Jones turned some heads during North Dakota State football’s controlled 60-play scrimmage played on a blustery Saturday, April 7, on Dacotah Field.
NDSU football moved into the second half of spring practice with an uptempo scrimmage that featured a little bit of everything.
On the second play of the scrimmage, Olson, a 6-foot, 226-pound junior from Plymouth, Minnesota (Wayzata H.S.), stepped in front of the intended receiver in the left flat and raced 40 yards into the end zone with the early score.

VCSU baseball splits with Dickinson
The Valley City State University baseball team split its double header with Dickinson State Friday, finishing the series at 2-2.
The Vikings lost the first game of the double header 1-0 in seven innings, and won the second 12-8 in nine innings.

Defensively, the Vikings had three errors, including one in the sixth inning that allowed Dickinson outfielder Jacob Muir to reach base and later score the only run of the game.

Vikings' offense falters in sweep to DSU

April 10, 2012

For the Valley City State University softball team, the final game of a four game series against Dickinson State was a bit refreshing.
After scoring no runs in the first three games of the series, including a 4-0 loss earlier Friday, the Vikings finally started producing runs, held a short lead, and nearly overcame a three-run deficit in the top of the seventh inning.
But a game-ending grounder by Hayley Bevan dashed the Vikings’ hope for a win and gave Dickinson the series sweep, ending the game with an 8-7 final score.
