Class B Girls Basketball All-Stars Get Even

Shiloh Christian guard Gabrielle Wilkinson and the 38th Lions Class B All-Stars avenged Tuesday’s 79-68 overtime loss, in which they squandered a 61-56 lead with 1:35 left in regulation at the Bismarck Civic Center, with Wednesday’s 59-51 win at the Fargo Civic Center.

Class B led 29-26 at halftime and encountered a familiar situation up 51-42 with 2:30 to go, but this time the edge was enough.

Nix, Lyter Miss Junior Gold Bowling Cut

Lexia Nix, 11, of Valley City, N.D., bowled a 421 on Wednesday to miss the Girls U12 cut at 83rd in the Junior Gold Bowling Championships in Buffalo, N.Y. Matthew Lyter, 15, of Sanborn, N.D., turned in a 676 to fall short of the Boys U15 Top 50 qualifiers at 184th.

Nix rolled a 107 in Wednesday’s Game 9, an 86 in Game 10, a 110 in Game 11 and a 118 in Game 12 for a three-day total of 1,349, a three-day 112.42 average and a three-day -1,051 differential.

Valley City Town & Country Club Men's Day Back after Rainouts

After weeks of poor Men’s Day weather, golfers were very excited to get back to the course and swing the sticks. Bob Matthews started the day off with a long putt on Hole 1, and won a prize sponsored by Bank Forward. Pizza Ranch sponsored the Closest to the Pin contest on Hole 2, and it was claimed by Alex Bitz. Jamie Wirth took home the prize on Hole 3 for Closest Shot from Outside 50 Yards with an approach shot that settled nicely to the pin. Wirth continued his day with the Closest Second Shot on Hole 4, and won a prize sponsored by Taco John’s.

Nix, Lyter Vying for Junior Bowling Golds

Lexia Nix, 11, of Valley City, N.D., Matthew Lyter, 15, of Sanborn, N.D., and a record number of the country’s top bowlers opened the 2014 Junior Gold Bowling Championships on Monday in Buffalo, N.Y.

Nix qualified for Junior Golds in second at 722 behind U12 Girls champion Kaelyn Berg’s 733 at May 3-4’s North Dakota State Pepsi Championships at Sunset Lanes 2014in Moorhead, Minn. Lyter took second with a 1,204 behind U15 winner Logan Dalbol’s 1,258.

Diegel, Class A All-Stars Roll in OT

Dierra Diegel scored 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting, went 3-for-3 from the line and pulled down eight rebounds as the 38th Lions Class A Girls Basketball All-Stars erased a five-point deficit with 1:35 left, forced overtime and cruised to a 79-68 win Tuesday at the Bismarck Civic Center.

“It’s an honor,” said Diegel, the 5-foot-10-inch Hi-Liner forward who practiced with Bismarck Century head coach Ron Metz and Class A twice on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. “I don’t remember the last time someone from Valley City was selected.”

Babe Ruth Bends Steele for Top District 6 Tournament Seed

Dawson Dietrich, Garret Suhr and Valley City Babe Ruth held Steele scoreless through six combined innings at home on Monday, setting the scoreboard ablaze to claim July 19-22’s top District 6 Tournament seed with a 10-0, five-inning District romp and a 21-2, five-inning District season-ending demolition.

“We played some pretty good baseball today,” Babe Ruth head coach Lance Lukes said. “Both pitchers struggled in their first innings, but then settled in with the lead that they were given.”

Post 60 Drops 3 of 4 to Harvey, Grafton

Legion Post 60 led Harvey 3-0 through two League innings Friday at Charlie Brown Field until Harvey came alive for an 8-4, eight-hit win, the momentum from which they carried over to take the non-Leaguer, 8-0.

“We had a couple bobbles, and when we did have errors they scored on them,” said Jesse Johnson of Post 60’s six-errors-to-two League affair.

Grafton led Saturday’s home League game 8-0 after five, but Post 60 scored six straight runs in an ill-fated comeback to fall 8-6.

Post 60 harnessed the inspiration from late in the League game to finish

11-Man West Stymies East, 21-2

Defense prevailed in Sunday’s 41st annual North Dakota 11-Man Shrine Bowl as the West held the East — featuring Valley City graduates Jesse Hass and Dustin Lindgren, and Maple Valley/Enderlin graduate Dylan Claus — out of the end zone in a 21-2 triumph at the FargoDome in Fargo, N.D.

Claus, Hass, Lindgren in Shrine Game Sunday

Hi-Liner graduates Jesse Hass and Dustin Lindgren join Enderlin/Maple Valley graduate defensive end Dylan Claus on the 11-Man Football East Team in Sunday’s 41st annual, WDAY TV-broadcasted North Dakota Shrine Bowl, 4 p.m. at the FargoDome in Fargo, N.D.

Hass, an offensive lineman, was First Team All-Region and First Team All-State, and became Valley City’s Most Valuable Offensive Lineman and a Large Dairy Queen Blizzard Award winner — for having performed a pancake block this season — at Nov. 24, 2013’s Hi-Liner Football Award Ceremony.
