Hi-Liner Boys Golf 7th at Fargo Country Club

Junior Jared Lentz led the Hi-Liners with an 87 as Valley City took seventh at 375 for four event points in Monday’s Fargo Shanley Invite at the Fargo Country Club.

“We played in horrendous weather today, with the boys battling the wind, cold and rain,” Valley City head coach Buff Murray said. “Today was probably the least amount of fun these young men have had on a golf course in their high school career.”

Engelhard, Meland NSAA Track & Field Athletes of the Week

Valley City State senior Wayne Engelhard is the North Star Athletic Association Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, and sophomore Jessica Meland is the NSAA Women’s Field Athlete of the Week, the NSAA announced Tuesday.

Jamestown freshman Bre Carlson is the NSAA Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, and Jimmie sophomore Jesse Hacker is the NSAA Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week.

Riley West Signs with Viking Basketball

Valley City State men’s basketball coach Jeff Kaminsky announced Monday that St. Cloud Technical and Community College point guard Riley West has signed a letter of intent to attend VCSU and play basketball for the Vikings this fall.

West, a 6-foot Lakeville, Minn., native who just completed his second year of collegiate basketball at St. Cloud Technical and Community College, was a two-year starter and helped lead the team to a 22-6 record in 2013. West averaged 14.5 points and 4.5 assists per game, and shot 34 percent from three-point range and 78 percent on free throws.

Hi-Liner Baseball Falls to Fargo South

Fargo South senior Cassidy Meyers batted in three runs on three hits in Tuesday’s early 16-2 win at Valley City before the Hi-Liners took a 3-2 lead but yielded 16 runs in the final three innings for an 18-3 loss.

“We didn’t hit much,” Hi-Liner senior Masyn Olson said. “We didn’t have many fielding errors, they just shelled us. But we’re talking better as a team, and our defense is better.”

Hi-Liner Softball Batters Fargo North

Hi-Liner bats came alive in the sixth inning for a 4-1 home win over Fargo North on Tuesday before stacking 10 fourth-inning runs in the follow-up for a decisive 13-3 triumph.

“We played well after a rocky start,” Valley City sophomore Heather Knutson said. “We found a way to hit the ball and extend leads.”

Fargo North Baseball Blanks Hi-Liners Twice

Fargo North sophomore Nathan Hegstad held Valley City batters to three hits to take Friday’s first game at Charlie Brown Field, 13-0, then junior Bryce Schroeder no-hit Valley City through five innings for a 17-0 win in the second.

Hi-Liner track and field set 16 new personal records at Friday’s Fargo South Classic Invite, from which the boys team took fifth of five teams with 41 points.

New personal records include:

Sophomore John Halgrimson’s 19-foot, 4-inch Long Jump for second place and eight points

Junior Ashley Durheim’s 74.96 seconds in the 400-meter Dash for 11th and six team points

Freshman Caleb Reign’s 45-foot, 2-inch Discus Throw and 77-foot, 3-inch Javelin Throw

Freshman Hunter Olstad’s 45-foot, 1-inch Javelin Throw

Sophomore Lucas Jury’s 25.98 seconds in the 200-meter Dash

Hi-Liner girls tennis won a home doubleheader against Grand Forks Central and Fargo Shanley on Friday, then tied for seventh at the 16-team East/West Invitational in West Fargo, N.D.

Hi-Liner Fastpitch Slays Grand Forks Central

Hi-Liner softball, having struggled to capitalize in recent games, scrambled the batting order and won both of Friday’s games at Grand Forks Central, taking the first contest 13-3 and the second 15-4.

“We flip-flopped No. 2 through No. 7 in the batting order,” Valley City head coach Jason Lindgren said. “They’ve been in same spots for years, and maybe some got comfortable. We hit better, and we’ll find out early this week how our newfangled lineup works against Fargo North and West Fargo.”

Hometown Vikings Win 4 Events at NSAA Invite

Valley City State sophomore Jessica Meland won the Women’s Shot Put and the Women’s Hammer Throw, sophomore Jenna Coghlan the Women’s Javelin Throw and senior Wayne Engelhard the Men’s 1,500-meter Run as the Vikings hosted Friday’s North Star Athletic Association Invitational against Jamestown, Dickinson State and Dakota State.

Meland’s toss of 12.12 meters (39 feet, 9.25 inches) earned her the Shot Put crown before she took the top Hammer Throw spot at 50.08 meters (164 feet, 4 inches).
