Cole Honl NSAA Baseball Player of the Week

Valley City State senior first baseman Cole Honl is the North Star Athletic Association Baseball Player-of-the-Week, the NSAA announced Monday.

Honl, the 6-foot-2-inch Moorhead, Minn. native, batted .500 and slugged .714 as the Vikings went 2-2 for the week against conference rival Presentation College. He picked up at least a hit in all four games, completing his two-day performance with a first-inning grand slam and two-run single in Saturday’s 14-0 series finale win.

Honl batted 7-for-14 with the grand slam and seven RBIs, scored five runs and stole two bases on two attempts.

Jessica Meland Makes Nationals with Record Toss

Valley City State sophomore thrower Jessica Meland finished in first place, shattered a Viking record and qualified for the NAIA National Championships with her winning toss of 50.29 meters (165 feet) at Friday’s Northern State Open at Swisher Field in Aberdeen, S.D.

Viking Softball's 8-Game Win Streak Swept Away

Viking softball’s eight-game win streak snapped with Friday’s 7-6 and 5-3 home losses to Dickinson State and Saturday’s 11-1 and 18-2 losses at Dickinson, N.D.

Valley City State remains a North Star Athletic Association-leading 8-2 in conference play and falls to 19-19 overall. The Vikings resume North Star action on Wednesday with a 2 p.m.-and-4 p.m. doubleheader at Mayville State. Mayville seeks vengeance after falling to the Vikings in April 9’s 3-1 and 2-1 sweep in Valley City.

Hi-Liner Softball Tops Devils Lake in 8 Innings

Hi-Liner softball needed eight innings to finish Devils Lake on the road Monday, but senior Dierra Diegel’s toss to sophomore Brenna Dieterle at first base foiled Firebird freshman Jesse Rude’s two-out bunt attempt and sealed the 5-4 win.

Big Plays, Big Hits for Viking Baseball Weekend Split

Valley City State baseball split this weekend’s four-game home series against North Star Athletic Association rival Presentation with Friday’s 5-3 seventh-inning loss and 6-5 seventh-inning rebound win before Saturday’s 12-8 fall and a 14-0 shutout triumph.

GF Red River Tennis Blanks Hi-Liner Girls

Hi-Liner girls tennis opened their season indoors at Eastern Dakota Conference rival Grand Forks Red River, winners of the last 12 State titles who return four of the top six players in the state, on Thursday and came away with a 9-0 defeat.

Viking Softball Sweeps Jamestown for Top Spot in NSAA

Valley City State softball ascended to first in the North Star Athletic Association standings with a 2-1 late-inning win in the first game and a 9-6 triumph in the second — their seventh and eighth wins in a row, all conference games — for Thursday’s doubleheader road sweep of rival University of Jamestown.

Hi-Liner Baseball Splits Late-Game Heroics

Hi-Liner baseball split a pair of late-inning dramatics Thursday night at Tornado Alley in Oakes, N.D. as they surrendered three runs in the bottom of the seventh to lose the first game 3-2, then held on 3-1 in game two’s home half of the fifth after Oakes loaded the bases.

Viking Softball Sweeps Series at Presentation

April 15, 2014

Viking softball torched Presentation College 14-4 in five innings and 12-8 in seven on Sunday to complete the weekend’s four-game road series sweep.

In the four-game sweep of Presentation, Valley City State racked up 48 runs, 62 hits, seven home runs and 12 doubles and pulled off a .440 team batting average.

The Vikings improve to 6-2 in the North Star Athletic Association and 17-15 overall.
