East No. 4 seed Legion Post 60 opened Wednesdayâs Class A State Tournament at John Randall Field in Wahpeton, N.D. in comeback fashion.
Up 3-0 halfway through the first inning and down 7-3 to end it, Post 60 reclaimed an 8-7 lead in the fifth and held on for a 10-8 upset of West No. 1 Beulah.
âIt was frickinâ awesome,â said Jordan Magnuson, who batted 1-for-3 with a run, a walk and an RBI.
Post 60 takes on West No. 3 Watford City, who beat East No. 2 Grafton, 10-6, Thursday at 5 p.m., broadcasted on 1490 AM KOVC and online at newsdakota.com.
Janine Stange, known as âNational Anthem Girlâ for her mission to sing âThe Star Spangled Bannerâ in every state by Sept. 14 to honor national heroes and the songâs 200th anniversary, will check North Dakota, her 44th state, off the list by performing at Aug. 5âs 7:02 p.m. Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks game.

Valley City 16U softball heads to Bismarck, N.D.âs Northern Championships on Wednesday eager to prove that age isnât everything.
Valley City Legion Post 60, guaranteed a spot in July 30âs Class A State Tournament in Wahpeton, N.D. after Thursdayâs 6-5 Regional win over Harvey, secured the East No. 4 seed with Saturdayâs 4-2 consolation quarterfinal loss to Grafton.
Post 60 entered consolation after falling 10-2 to Wahpeton on Thursday.
Grafton forced Wahpeton into a second title game with a 3-1 win, but Wahpeton held on, 8-5, in the finisher.
Wahpeton goes to State No. 1, Grafton No. 2 and Casselton No. 3.

Up 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, Harvey Post 28âs Shawn Kourajian on second and Trevor Schimke on third in Thursdayâs Class A East Regional opener, Chase Carpenter struck out Brian Fike on three straight pitches for the save, a matchup with top seed Wahpeton and a guaranteed spot in July 30âs State Tournament in Wahpeton, N.D.
âWe rolled in like conquistadors,â said Legion Post 60 assistant coach Erick Counts of Post 60âs marauding spirit coming into Regionals. â[Valley City head coach Kyle] Roelfsema shaved his mustache like a conquistador.â
Valley City Legion Post 60 carry the No. 3 seed into Thursdayâs Grafton Regional Tournament after a 3-13 regular season campaign and look to hit their stride starting with an 11 a.m. debut against Harvey.
âThere isnât a team with better players position-by-position,â said Post 60 head coach Kyle Roelfsema of his squad intent on reducing mistakes in key moments that contributed to seven losses of three or fewer runs.
Thursdayâs winner faces Wahpeton at 4 p.m. Thursday, the loser the Grafton-Casselton loser at 6:30 p.m Thursday.
Post 60 scored 4.75 runs per contest and gave up 12.1.
Valley City Babe Ruth scored five runs in the sixth inning of Tuesdayâs District 6 Tournament championship to finish Lisbon, 10-0, for their second title in as many years and a trip to August 1âs State Tournament in New Rockford, N.D.
Lisbon landed only six hits as they all too often lined into Valley
City gloves and could not bring runners home against Dawson Dietrich, who pitched six innings for a single walk and five strikeouts.
Valley City picked up 11 hits and enjoyed three Lisbon errors.
Harvey led visiting Legion Post 60 3-1 through four innings on Monday night, but impending weather drew a coin flip from which Post 60 took the win.
Harvey scored a run in the first inning, Austin Bergâs RBI tied it in the top of the fourth and Harvey scored two more in the home half.
Post 60 landed three hits and committed an error, Harvey seven hits and four errors.
Chase Carpenter drew a walk.
Austen Meyer pitched three innings for a strikeout, Berg two outs in the fourth.
