VCHS Boys Lose to West Fargo

January 9, 2013

WEST FARGO — There are a nights a team just finds its rhythm early and in Tuesday’s 80-49 loss to West Fargo, the Valley City High School basketball team was on the wrong end of the scenario.
On their home court, the Packers scored 15 points in the first four minutes, and never let up, shooting 62 percent from the 3-point line and finishing 10-12 from long distance in the first half.

VCHS Girls Get 1st Loss

January 9, 2013

WEST FARGO — For the first month of the season, the Valley City High School girls basketball team was tested in plenty of ways. Overtime. Large comebacks.
But after a 68-47 loss Tuesday at West Fargo High School, the previously undefeated Hi-Liners faced their toughest challenge yet — the defending state runner-up.
Though the Hi-Liner girls opened the game with a point-for-point run with the Packers, a lack of scoring late in the first half kept Valley City from winning their seventh straight to start the season.

Late Push Ups VCHS Girls to 6-0

January 6, 2013

As the clock wound down in the Valley City High School girls basketball team's 55-51 win over St. Mary's Saturday at the Hi-Liner Activity Center, junior Dierra Diegel consistently found herself in a high pressure situation.
Not only was she playing the final five minutes of the second half with four fouls, but of the Hi-Liners' final eight free throws in the game, Diegel took six.
"I knew those free throws were going to count, so I was thinking, 'I've got to make these. I've got to put them in, separate it, make it so they don't have any last second chance to win the game," Diegel said.

Vikings Sweep Cougars

January 6, 2013

The Valley City State University mens basketball team has spent the entire season adapting to the injuries sustained by various team members.
Friday, in the team's 78-67 win over NCAA Division III's University of Minnesota — Morris, the Vikings were short their tall post player Gus Kuebler, who isn't injured, but had the night off as the team readies for a key stretch of the season.
With Kuebler out of the lineup, VCSU coach Jeff Kaminsky encouraged his guards to help grab rebounds, and more than anyone, senior John Raquel responded.

January 3, 2013

Editor's note: 2012 was my first full calendar year as a staff member of the Times-Record, and what a year it was. Barnes County saw championships on both the state and national levels, and even the teams that fell just short gave fans a heck of a ride. Although there were too many sports stories to choose from, I worked with other members of the editorial staff to choose this list of 10 biggest happenings in local sports from the last year. With any abbreiviated list, there is sure to be a bit of disagreement.
