Schlaufman: Many Thanks, Barnes County

February 11, 2013

So long and farewell

By Scott Schlaufman

A few months ago, I went up to Grafton.
It was a unique trip for many reasons. The Valley City High School football team was playing there in the semifinals of the AA playoffs, the day after a large snow storm hit the area.
The field itself had been plowed early that morning, but only the field, plus about a foot beyond, leaving the bleacher-less Valley City crowd to packed along the sidelines.
As the game went on, one of the girls from the school turns and asks me, "Scott- why aren't you cheering?"

VCHS Gymnastics Finishes Regular Season

February 11, 2013

The Valley City High School gymnastics team finished the regular season last Thursday, taking third in a meet in Jamestown.
The Hi-Liners earned their highest team score of the season despite having Sara Gilbertson, one of the team's most consistent vaulters and a strong beam performer, out with a sore ankle.
Rebekah Fisher led the way with a 35.80 All Around score and placed in all events.

Viking Women Get 20th Win in Free Throw Heavy Contest

February 10, 2013

Once in a while, a team will play a game in which key points are decided on free throws.
But at times in the foul-heavy second half of the Valley City State University womens basketball team's 64-58 win over South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Saturday at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse, the charity stripe seemed to be the primary method of scoring.
The two teams combined for 45 free throw attempts in the half alone, with the Vikings getting 18 of their 33 second-half points at the line.

Milligen Breaks 1,000 points in VCSU's 20th win

February 10, 2013

Before he took the floor for Saturday's 61-55 win over South Dakota School of Mines and Technology at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse, Valley City State University guard Sekani Milligen knew he had a chance at two milestones: the 1,000-point mark in his career, and the team's 20th win.
Though the first is quite an accomplishment, especially given that all 1,000 points have been scored in the last two years, his mind was on the team aspect.

Shane Undem Drops To 145 With Hopes of A State Title

February 8, 2013

By nearly any measure, Valley City High School senior Shane Undem has had a successful wrestling career.
The last three years, he's placed in all three trips to state. His trip two years ago made even more impressive by the quick turnaround from a reconstructive surgery on his knee the November before the season started. Last year, he had his first top-four finish.
But as he approaches the end of his time on the high school circuit, he's got one thing on his mind — a state title.

Viking Women Upset No. 13 Jimmies

February 7, 2013

JAMESTOWN — When the Valley City State University womens basketball team hosted Jamestown College last week, the 17-point loss wasn’t what the Vikings had in mind.
Wednesday at the Jamestown Civic Center, the Vikings had a result more their style, getting strong post play offensively, while limiting the Jimmies’ inside scoring to upset the No. 13 Jimmies 54-48 on their home court.
“It was a good game,” Valley City coach Jill DeVries said. “Neither team played particularly well, I would say, but that’s okay. We got to come away with the win.”

Viking Men Lose to Jamestown in OT

February 7, 2013

JAMESTOWN — The No. 19 Valley City State University mens basketball teams had plenty of ups and downs in a 66-65 overtime loss to Jamestown College Wednesday at the Jamestown Civic Center.
But in the end, the rubber match between the two teams was seemingly decided in each team's final possession.
Though the plays were similar, the team's ace guard driving for a layup, the difference lied in a foul call that sent Jamestown's Mark Hoge to the foul line, where it hit the two free throws that decided the game.
