Perennial tennis championship contender Grand Forks Red River visited Valley City for an Eastern Dakota Conference match on Thursday amid a week of heat-induced schedule changes.
Red River took the match, 9-0, though Hi-Liner head coach Matt Nielson was impressed with his team's efforts.
"Red River is Red River," Nielson said. "They haven't won the state championship 14 consecutive time because they are lucky — they are the best in the state. Their No. 1's to No. 4's all have the talent to win the state championship. Their No. 5, (Andrew) Godon, took 5th in the state last year."
The Valley City State football team has announced its team captains for the 2013 season.
The Vikings named Matt Craft and Jake Miller as new team captains to join Jake Thurston and George Trujillo, who were named team captains following spring practice.
Craft is a senior defensive lineman from Fairbanks, Alaska, who recorded 49 tackles and 3.5 sacks last season. Miller, a junior tight end from Rolla, N.D., had eight catches for 75 yards last season and is expected to play a much bigger role in 2013.
Viking golf opened the season Wednesday with a solid showing at the University of Jamestown Open on the 6,637-yard, Par-72 Hillcrest Golf Course.
Four Vikings placed in the Top 10, led by Haley Christofferson, who shot a 90 for sixth place in the women's division. Alyssa Tait carded a 101 to finish 11th.
