Because of low participation numbers, the Valley City High School boys basketball program will not field a junior varsity team for the 2013-2014 school year, Dan Larson, the activities director for Valley City Public Schools, announced.
"If everyone stayed out that's currently playing in (grades) 9-11 and eighth grade, we'd have approximately 24 athletes," Larson told the VCPS school board during its regular meeting Monday.
There are plenty of advantages to a home game. Friendly crowd. Familiar surroundings. No sleeping in a hotel.
But when the No. 17 Valley City State University mens basketball team started its season in November, one of the main goals the team had was to be undefeated at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse, not necessarily for those reasons, but because it makes the team’s postseason goals more attainable.
Weather Affects Area Sports
The blizzard that hit Barnes County over the weekend caused schedule changes for several local sports teams.
The Valley City High School wrestling team had its home dual Frisday against Red River High School postponed. No makeup date had been announced as of press time.
The Valley City Parks and Recreation Youth Basketball tournaments that were scheduled for Saturday were cancelled.
The Maple Valley boys basketball team's game at Richland Friday was postponed until Feb. 2.
The No. 12 Valley City State University women’s basketball team had a weekend full of ups and downs.
There were two wins, a close loss to an opponent the Vikings had beaten earlier in the year. VCSU senior Katie Ralston even hit a scoring milestone, surpassing the 1,000 point mark in her college career.
