The Valley Twisters gymnastics teams performed well in meets last month.
The team started by competing in the 2012 Frosty Classic, held in Valley City Jan. 14 and 15.
The Twisters Level 4 team took third, but did not have enough athletes for a team score in Levels 5 or 6.
For the Level 4 team Jennifer Anderson was 1st on the Balance Beam. Olivia Olson placed 10th. Michaela Thiebert placed 4th on the Uneven Bars and 4th on the Vault with a score 9.4. Anderson placed 9th on Vault with a 9.3. Anderson also placed 7th on Floor.

Wrestlers lose close dual to Jamestown

February 7, 2012

With only five juniors and seniors, but plenty of success, it's easy to forget just how young some of Valley City High School's wrestlers are.
But in Thursday's 36-33 home dual loss to Jamestown, several of the Hi-Liners struggled against older competition in key matches.
"In reality we're a really young team," said Valley City coach Aaron Larson. "We wrestled fine, of course we wanted to win, but we're learning."
Larson said the dual played out about how he expected it to, with one of the key matches coming at 132 pounds.

McDonald's 3-pointer lifts No. 17 Vikings over No.7 Jamestown

February 2, 2012

JAMESTOWN — With six seconds left in overtime and the score tied at 83-83, the Valley City State University mens basketball team had an inbounds play set under their own basket at the Jamestown Civic Center Wednesday.
But when the Vikings noticed that Jamestown College forward Travis Burley was playing in the backcourt, rather than up front trying for a steal, VCSU guard A.J. McDonald took advantage of the situation.
"I went up and I got the ball, and I just cleared the floor," McDonald said. "I told (my teammates) I was feeling it, so just give it to me and they trusted me."

VCSU women lose rematch with Jamestown

February 2, 2012

JAMESTOWN — Despite being unranked all year, the Valley City State University womens basketball has shown it can play with rival Jamestown College. The problem has been in the finish.
The first time the teams met, last month in the championship of the Dakota Athletic Conference Tip-Off tournament, Valley City lost 61-60 in overtime.
In the rematch, it was nearly the same results as the Vikings lost by only two points, 49-47, to the No. 11 Jimmies at the Jamestown Civic Center.

Maple Valley boys get 14th straight win in final home game

The Raiders had little problem beating Sargent Central 77-43.
Smith looked at as a “good win to go out on”, but hardly saw it as the end.
“It’s going to be emotional but we’ve got a long road hopefully,” Smith said.

Maple Valley girls keep it simple in win over Firebirds

January 31, 2012

With the season's end approaching rapidly, the Maple Valley girls basketball team got a little experimental in Monday's 55-29 home win over Central Prairie.
Rather than playing their normal 2-3 zone, the Raiders switched over to a 1-3-1 instead.
Though coach Jeff Miller said he was pleased with the results of the defense, it was the second half, when the defense got back to basics, the Raiders thrived.
In the third quarter, Maple Valley outscored the Firebirds 20-2 to take a 47-20 lead.

Valley City teams win championships at local youth tournament

January 30, 2012

Valley City teams don't get a chance to play many tournaments in front of a home-town crowd, so Saturday offered a change of pace.
Rather than hitting the road, three local youth teams — the 6th grade B boys, 6th grade girls and 4th grade B boys — were among 42 teams in seven divisions that took the court at the Valley City Parks and Recreation District Youth Basketball Tournament Saturday.
The tournaments were played on courts spanning from the Recreation Center and City Auditorium buildings to the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse at Valley City State University.

Twins Manager Gardenhire updates VC fans on Morneau, Mauer, free agents

January 18, 2012

During Tuesday's stop in Valley City, Minnesota Twins hitting coach Joe Vavra emphasized the value of having veteran leaders on the team.
"You've got to have those guys in the clubhouse to take control of the people they're dressing with," Vavra told an audience of about 60 people at Trestle's Bar and Grill Tuesday. "We're off to the side, we're promoting, obviously, what they're supposed to get done on the field, but you've got to have a leader step up," he said. "You've got to have a voice, somebody they can relate to when times are down."
