When Valley City High School volleyball coach Katy Van Dyke entered the season, she set out to change things up.
From the general formula of practice to the way the team runs its 6-2 rotation, the Hi-Liners are building on familiar skills and adding a second defense to its repertoire.
"There's a lot more to what we've done in the past that we're going to do this year," Van Dyke said.
The Hi-Liners open the season today and Saturday with six matches at the Bismarck High/Bismarck Century Crossover tournament in Bismarck.
The Valley City High School boys tennis team only won a single match last year against an Eastern Dakota Conference regional opponent, but they made it count.
After going winless against regional competition last season, the team beat Fargo South 3-2 in the regional tournament play-in match
"If you're going to get one victory, that's the victory to get," coach Matt Nielson said.
Though the team eventually lost in the regional tournament, it gave the team a starting point and this year the Hi-Liners hope to continue their growth in the EDC.
