The communication between a baseball coach and a player on the base paths can be hard to follow at times. A swipe of the shoulder. A pat on the head. Quick touch to the nose. It's subtle and used to keep an opponent off guard with hit and runs, bunts, and steals.
But in the the bottom of the seventh inning of the Valley City Babe Ruth baseball team's 10-9 win in the first game of a double header with Fargo Monday at Charlie Brown Memorial Field, VC third baseman Collin Schroeder got things mixed up on the base paths.

Steele resident Enzminger enjoys riding close to home

July 15, 2012

Being a professional bull rider is somewhat of a dream for 20-year-old Clayton Enzminger.
Nearly every weekend, the Steele resident hits the road with friend and travel partner Cole Hermanson to ride in rodeos, including some on the Professional Bull Riding circuit, all across the nation.
The only problem is that the events tend to be far from home.
"There are opportunities that come close, but going to PBRs and pro rodeos, you've got to travel a lot," said Enzminger, who rides as a pro but has yet to ride in a PBR event.

There are times in baseball where an error plays little role in the outcome of a game.
But for the Valley City Babe Ruth team, that wasn’t the case in a 5-4 loss in the first game of a double header sweep to LaMoure Thursday at Charlie Brown Memorial Field. Valley City also lost 3-1 in a three inning second game.

Post 60 gets swept
The Valley City Post 60 American Legion baseball struggled offensively Monday and was swept by Kindred.
The team was only able to put together four total hits in the two games despite strong efforts from pitchers Chase Carpenter and Brett Stearns.
Valley City lost the first game 3-0. Kindred scored one run in the second, fourth and fifth innings.
Carpenter threw all six innings with only four hits allowed and eight strikeouts. He also went 1-2 at the plate. Anthony Olstad had Post 60’s only other hit.

VC Babe Ruth splits with Oakes

July 10, 2012

Valley City Babe Ruth player Jacob Miller showed plenty of tenacity in Monday’s double header split with Oakes.
As his team played the first game, a 4-2 loss, he donned the catcher’s gear and took his spot behind the plate for all seven innings in 90 degree weather.
He followed it by switching battery positions for game two, where he pitched all four innings and scored two runs in a 5-1 win.
In both instances, coach Lance Lukes was pleased as the team readies for the District 6 tournament later this month in Steele.
