"That, to me, really was the was the end of it," Horner said. "I never really thought that it would go on and I'd end up being named the guy."
Turns out, the nomination from VCSU head coach Dennis McCulloch wasn't the end of it.

Student-Led Cardinal Crazies Add Atmosphere to VCSU Basketball

November 23, 2012

Valley City State University womens basketball coach Jill DeVries has seen the difference a good fan base can make.
"It was very evident a couple of years ago, when we had a full house for the Jamestown game, the difference the crowd can have in a game," DeVries said. "Even when we've been on the road at places like Dordt, they just have an outstanding student following.
"The environment can be such a game changer."
It's a culture that has always been at VCSU for games against rivals like Jamestown College, but otherwise left a frequently quiet crowd.

Hunter's 17 gets VCSU past Dickinson

November 20, 2012

When Valley City State University women's basketball coach Jill DeVries looked at the matchup between her team and Dickinson State University Saturday and thought her team could have some fun in the paint.
"We thought we could do some things with our post players because we're probably a litle quicker," DeVries said.
So as the Blue Hawks trapped Valley City's guards, leaving post players open, the Vikings capitalized, getting 29 combined points from Brittany Lehner and Kelsey Hunter in an 81-59 win at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse in the teams' first encounter this season.

Missed shot puts VCSU men past Dickinson

November 20, 2012

As the Valley City State University mens basketball team left the floor following its 63-61 win over Dickinson State at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse, there was only a hint of the normal joy that comes with victory.
More than anything, there was disappointment that what seemed a sure victory — a 10-point lead with two minutes left — was ultimately decided by a missed buzzer beating 3-pointer from Dickinson's Anthony Hodges, on an open look from the corner that would have sent the Blue Hawks away with the win.

November 15, 2012

For the first 20 minutes of the Valley City State University women's basketball team's game with St. Cloud State Wednesday at W.E. Osmon Field house, the Vikings struggled at times against a tough Huskie defense, but never let the game get out of hand, even mounting a story run to keep it close at halftime in the 70-45 loss.
But in the second half of the exhibition for the Vikings, which has no effect on the team's win-loss record, the pressure finally got to them.
