FARGO — As the Griggs/Barnes County football team walked off the field at Shanley High School's Cichy Stadium Tuesday, the looks on the faces of the players nearly said it all.
As the Titans gave each other a hug and a handshake, seniors seemed to be holding back tears following a 47-15 loss to the Deacons in their final game of the season.
It was a loss that, though large on the scoreboard, left second-year coach Davy Zinke plenty happy as the team continued its improvements this season.
Weekend football stats
The Valley City High School football team put up over double the offense they allowed in their 40-14 win over Central Cass Thursday.
The Hi-Liners had 296 total yards of offense, 222 rushing, and allowed only 142 to the visiting Squirrels.
Anthony Olstad finished with 94 yards rushing on 18 attempts with two touchdowns. Shane Undem had 55 yards on 12 attempts. Tayler Lentz finished with three interceptions, one of which was run back for a touchdown and caught three passes for 34 yards, one for a touchdown.
TOWER CITY — As the crowd packed into Maple Valley High School for Monday night's match between the Raiders and defending champion Central Cass, The stage seemed set for a big match.
There was a packed crowd, covered in pink for breast cancer awareness month, with students and parents from both sides, and a Maple Valley team that held its own earlier this year with the Squirrels.
But Maple Valley struggled to get much momentum, which allowed Central Cass to go on big runs and get a 25-11,25-13, 25-17 win in the Raiders' last home match of the year.

ENDERLIN — During the final few drives of Fridays' 20-14 win over Oakes, Maple Valley/Enderlin football coach Brett Kapaun was okay with giving the visiting Tornadoes a few extra points, so long as the Falcons left with the win.
He told his team to simply "bend, don't break."
Though the Falcons were bent about as far as they could go, defending the end zone from their own two-yard line with 37 seconds left, they didn't break, forcing and recovering a fumble in the redzone to keep the Tornadoes from scoring what would have likely been the game-winning points.
The Valley City State football team picked up its fifth win of the season Saturday, beating NCAA Division III opponent Gustavus Adolphus College 16-0 in St. Peter, Minn.
The Vikings got the win behind solid defense, as well as key kicks from Thomas Cortez, whose leg accounted for 10 of the Vikings' 16 points.
VCSU scored on the opening drive of the game, getting behind a solid run game from Taylor Cino and Derek Elliot.
The drive ate up nearly five minutes of the clock, ending on a 31-yard field goal by Cortez.

As the stands emptied Thursday night at Hanna Field, things were seemingly quiet inside the stadium. But in the parking lot, there was a hint of celebration as fans honked their horns and exchanged high fives before driving off for the night. It wasn't without reason.
With a 40-14 win over Central Cass, the Valley City High School team clinched its return to the Class AA state playoffs for the first time since 2010.
It was a win in which Valley City fell behind on the opening drive, but got ahead late in the first quarter and never let up.

Elliot Honored for 2nd Straight Week
Valley City State University's Derek Elliott has earned top honors in the Association of Independent Institutions this week as Elliott has been named the Male Athlete of the Week for the week of Oct. 1-7.
MONTPELIER — By the time Litchville-Marion/Montpelier's Heather Graalum stepped up to the service line in the fifth set of the team's 3-2 win over Barnes County North, she admits there were a few nerves.
Earlier in the night, the Rebels had taken a two set lead in the match but watched a 21-6 lead in the third disappear as the Bison found their groove and evened it out at two sets each.
But after BCN's Maggie Beddow hit one into the net early in the fifth, giving Graalum the serve and 4-3 lead, the senior was focused primarily on keeping it in.
MILNOR, N.D. – Maple Valley/Enderlin football coach Brett Kapaun expected "a dogfight" Friday against Milnor/North Sargent, but what he got was completely unexpected.
Instead of a close fight to the finish, the previously-undefeated Falcons fell 28-6 to a feisty Bulldog squad that put together 20 points in the second half.
It was an outcome that left both coaches shocked..
"Watching Enderlin/Maple Valley against Northern Cass last week we knew the type of team they had but I never imagined a 28-6 spread," MNS coach Eric Olson said.
