Donations Sought for Fire Victims

A fund has been established for an Oriska family who lost everything in a house fire last week.
On Dec. 4, everyone was gone when the home Becky Sundstrom shared with Andrew Gubrud and daughter Nellie was destroyed by fire. While the family was out of harm's way, their four dogs – Daisy, Hector, Peanut and Astrid – all perished in the blaze.
Sundstrom's co-workers at First Community Credit Union have set up a fund for the family. Donations can be sent to First Community Credit Union, 149 Fourth Street Northeast or P.O. Box 36, Valley City, ND 58072.

Deputies Work To Brighten The Season

For the third year in a row, the deputies and reserve deputies of the Barnes County Sheriff Office are working to make the holiday season brighter for families or individuals that have had a major tragedy in the last year through its Secret Santa Program, said Chief Deputy Don Fiebiger. VCSU Adds New Department, Software Engineering Major

A new department at Valley City State University brings a new software engineering major. The computer systems and software engineering department, added this fall, also has a minor in computer science and will continue to offer a computer information systems major.

City Considers New Liquor License Ordinance

Valley City is in the process of updating its liquor license ordinance and has asked for input from local liquor establishment owners to make the process go smoothly. On Tuesday, city leaders held an informal meeting with liquor license holders to discuss what could – or should not – be included in the updated ordinance.
Currently, the city's liquor license ordinance is decades old, and some establishments are not in compliance with state statutes, according to Russell Myhre, Valley City City Attorney.

President's House Guest Inn to Get Elevator, Other Renovations

A preservation society in Valley City is taking its next steps toward renovating the President's House Guest Inn on the campus of Valley City State University.
Jan Stoman, co-chair of the President's House Preservation Society, said she and other volunteers have worked long and hard to preserve and restore the interior of the house, and the next step is to address accessibility and the exterior.

Joe Diffie, Parmalee to Perform at NDWS Concert

North Dakota Winter Show Manager Dawn Riley said country singer Joe Diffie, upcoming country group Parmalee and Fargo-based band 32 Below are set to perform at the Winter Show concert Friday, March 7.
Diffie, a country singer known for songs "Pickup Man," Bigger Than the Beatles," and "Third Rock from the Sun," will headline this year's show with Parmalee, an upcoming country music band known for their hit single "Carolina."
32 Below, a regionally-known country and rock band, will open the show.
The concert will be held at the NDWS event center, and tickets go on sale Feb. 10.
