Arthur Friese runs for city commission

The June 12 city election will see five candidates vying for two City Commissioner seats vacated by George Dutton and Jon Wagar. This week, the T-R will interview all five candidates to provide a better look at those seeking office and their take on the issues facing Valley City. Going alphabetically, the third interviewee is candidate Arthur Friese.

Awards, inductions and scholarships at VCHS

The Hi-Liners donned their dapperest duds for the 2012 Valley City High School Awards Banquet in the VCHS Theater in the high school on Monday night.

The evening saw several dozen students receive awards and scholarships and the induction of members in to the National Honor Society and the Minerva Chapter of the National Honor Society.

PD chief field down to 5

The city of Valley City has narrowed their search for a new Chief of Police to three out-of-state and two local candidates, according to City Administrator and hiring committee member David Schelkopf. Mark McDonald, Doug Kiefert, Fred Thompson, Patricia Nowak and Ryan Evans have been selected for final in-person interviews to take place from May 8 to 15.

“Any one of the people on this list would be a fine candidate for Valley City,” Schelkopf said. “Now we just have to drill them and pick the best one.”

Sophia Ann snaps into photography world

Rachel Goerke officially opened Sophia Ann Photography in September 2011 after moving to Valley City from California, and is looking to make a name for herself in the portrait business. But whose name is it?

“Sophia was the first cat I ever owned, and I’ve always loved that name,” Goerke said. “And my middle name is Ann, so I thought we’d do something fun and cute.”

Originally from the East Bay area, an hour inland from San Francisco, Goerke was studying to be pre-med with dreams of becoming a pediatrician, but found a different path calling her.

BC gets $500K in flood money

The North Dakota State Board of University and School Lands, also referred to as the State Land Board, approved $25.6 million for statewide flood recovery projects in nine counties, with $500,000 of that going to 10 projects in Barnes County.

“These state grants are an important part of our on-going work to help communities and rural areas across our state recover from last year’s major flood events,” said Gov. Jack Dalrymple, chair of the State Land Board, in a news release. “We will not waiver in our commitment to help meet these changes.”

Blonde Of The Prairie: Remember to remember what you’re saying

I have a memory. Oh my do I have a memory. I remember things that could have been purged long ago and far away but my memory has memorized them and that’s all there is to it. In the 10th grade I memorized Marc Anthony’s speech at Caesar’s funeral. I do a very impressive dramatic impression of this grand Shakespearian moment. Stop me on the street any day and I’ll prove it. The point is I don’t need to know this anymore for any reason other than I do. The whole entire speech lives long in my memory-but that’s not all.

VCHS takes 3rd in Science Olympiad

Valley City’s Junior and Senior High Science Olympiad teams had a strong showing at the North Dakota State Science Olympiad which took place at North Dakota State University on April 21.

The Junior High took third place overall out of 23 teams and the Senior High took 11th out of 24 teams.
