Dispatch Center Moving

September 19, 2013

Despite plans to finish Tuesday, Barnes County Dispatch as of Wednesday has still not completed its move from the Valley City Police Department to its new office in the Barnes County Courthouse.
Kimberly Franklin, director of Barnes County Emergency Management, said Tuesday, “The move is expected to be completed by the end of today if all goes well.” All didn't go exactly as planned, Franklin said Wednesday.

VCHS Celebrates Homecoming Next Week

Valley City High School has events planned all next week for its homecoming. Angela Van Bruggen, VCHS student council advisor, encourages the community to come out and celebrate their Hi-Liner pride.
New this year is a community pep fest and coronation Monday night at 7:15 p.m. at the Hi-Liner Activity Center. The free community event will consist of the pep band, cheerleaders and dance team followed by a ceremony featuring the VCHS Concert Choir to crown the 2013 homecoming king and queen.

VC Man Arrested on Sex Charges

September 18, 2013

A Valley City man has been arrested and charged with gross sexual imposition.
Timothy Tucker, 30, was arrested on Sept. 10 for the Sept 5 incident that involved a female under 15, according to Barnes County State's Attorney Lee Grossman.
Tucker, who was arrested by Valley City Police, is held in the Barnes County Correctional Facility on $10,000 bond. His next court date will be Oct. 12.

Native of Mexico Speaks on Country's Independence at VCSU

A new club, Diversity @ VCSU, held its first event related to diversity and inclusion Monday afternoon. In an effort to promote and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Abel Turrubiates, native of Mexico, gave a presentation on Mexican Independence Day in Valley City State University's Skoal Room.
The event, open to students and the community, was the first of many planned over the next two semesters. VCSU hired diversity and inclusion coordinator Nadja Johnson early this year to educate students on various cultures throughout the world and help students of all diversities feel included.

Extension Classes Help Families

Barnes County is one of 10 Parent Resource Centers in North Dakota, with County Extension offering parenting classes to help families deal with difficult issues.
Amy Tichy, PRC coordinator for Barnes County told Barnes County commissioners Tuesday classes including “Crossroads of Parenting and Divorce,” a Family Art Hour and a 16 week program targeting families at high risk for child abuse and neglect are being offered.

Barnes County Rejects Campground, Seeking Consensus

September 18, 2013

Barnes County Commissioners have rejected a proposed new campground off Barnes County 21 near Lake Ashtabula, in hopes Scott Cole can reach an agreement with neighbors.
Commissioners rejected the plan for a campground with space for about 20 units after about six Getchell Township residents said they were uncomfortable with the proposal.
Commissioners voted 1-4 against the plan, with Rodger Berntson voting in favor.

Health Department Hosts Safety Conference

September 17, 2013

Area officials and those who work with children are being sought to attend an upcoming child passenger safety conference in Bismarck Oct. 1 and 2.
The North Dakota Department of Health's Child Passenger Safety Program is sponsoring the "Celebrating 30 Years of Buckling up Children" Child Passenger Safety Conference at the Ramada Bismarck.

Local Leaders Take Walk Through VC

September 17, 2013

Valley City was host to the state Rec and Park Conference last week, and one event they hosted was a walk audit in which community leaders could participate. On Thursday, Mark Fenton, nationally-acclaimed authority on transportation, streets, planning and public health, visited the conference, spoke to local leaders and took them on a walk, explaining how an audit works along the way.
Thursday's walk served the purpose of showing leaders how to conduct an audit, but also gave participants an idea of how accommodating the area is for pedestrian traffic.

The Barnes County Sheriff's Department and local farmers who participated in the 2011 capture of an escaped prisoner from an area corn field will be reimbursed for their efforts.

Leever's Cake Decorator Receives Awards

September 16, 2013

Leever's Foods cake decorator LeAnn Strittmatter was given awards for two cakes she created and showed at the North Dakota Grocers Association Cake Challenge at the Ramada Inn in Fargo last Monday.
The Valley City resident placed first in the novelty theme cake division for a swan cake she made and third in the advance cupcake division for a tiger cake she made out of cupcakes.
