NOME â The Barnes County Water Resource District Board met Monday with an agenda that included the Thordenskjold Drain Assessment District in the southeast portion of the county and a proposed outlet on Ten Mile Lake in the northwestern section of the county.
The assessment district for the Thordenskjold drain near Nome has grown from less than 8,000 acres to 23,400 acres.

Two local mechanics have shown the state, AAA and the Ford Motor Company they know their way around an automobile.
Sheyenne Valley Area Career and Technology Center Students Brandon Compson and Dillon Baasch were at the West Fargo Fairgrounds with their automotive technology instructor Jim McFadgen to compete in the state finals of the 2012 Ford AAA Student Automotive Skills competition. The pair took second place for their efforts.
Tech center director Jeff Bopp said he received a picture from McFadgen on his phone of the winning team.
A Valley City man was honored by the Valley City Education Association as the 2011 âFriend of Educationâ at Wednesday nightâs teacher appreciation banquet at Valley City High School.
Local carpenter and Vietnam war veteran Dean Pedersen received the award, which is given to people who support education in extraordinary ways without being an employee of the district.
Pedersen, who was blinded by a hand grenade during the war, speaks to the freshman English classes during their unit on Vietnam.
Family and friends described the late Jodi Kvien Opatz in numerous ways-- caring compassionate and protective. âShe would do anything for me,â said her son Jaustin, 10.
Opatz passed away Friday, only two days before she was to celebrate Motherâs Day with Jaustin, his brother Jaiden, 15, and sister Jara, 13.
On a Facebook page created in memory of Opatz, her eldest son Jaiden wished her a happy Motherâs Day on Sunday. Others shared their memories, one recalling her beautiful smile.

VALLEY CITY (NewsDakota.com) Authorities say a Valley City woman died today after she went into the Sheyenne River. The womanâs body was recovered in the river by Barnes County and Valley City Fire and Rescue Squad members Friday morning around 8:30.
Fire Chief Gary Retterath says members from the Valley City public works department working on lift station number one saw a woman in the river about 8:20 Friday morning.
National Weather Service meteorologist Peter Rogers in Grand Forks said Thursday after a week of wildly ranging weather, the weekend is looking like it will shape up nicely.
âLooks like a good weekend overall,â said Rogers. âPrecipitation-wise weâre going to be dry all weekend, region-wide, not just in the Valley City area.â
Bruce Maynard from Bellingham, Wash., says he is used to a âpretty good living.â
âI like five-star restaurants; I like cruises around the world; I like a beautiful home and my gorgeous ocean-going yacht, all those kinds of things, not to mention my gorgeous wife,â he said as he walked across Eckelson Lake on County Road 22. âSo in the last 24 months, I have lost everything.â
The Valley City Convention and Visitors Bureau, whose primary purpose is bringing visitors to the area, had a lot to celebrate Thursday. As part of National Tourism Week, the CVB celebrated new additions to Valley City.
âTourism has been on the rise in Valley City as evidenced by increased accommodation tax collections and a rise in the food and beverage tax amount. These are two funds that help quantify the number of visitors in the area. Visitors signing in at the Rosebud Visitor Center has averaged over 2,000 a year,â said Mary Lee Nielson, marketing director of CVB.

The 16th annual Cavalier Motorcycle Ride-In, âLittle Sturgis of the Northâ, will be held in Cavalier, N.D., on Saturday, June 16th with other activities scheduled June 15 and 17.
