Students Build Pollinator Garden At Fish Hatchery

Students in Valley City State University's conservation biology class spent part of Friday afternoon at the Valley City National Fish Hatchery picnic area, planning and and working on a pollinator garden they are working on as part of the class.
Said Casey Williams, VCSU fisheries biology professor at VCSU, “The students are building a pollinator garden, trying to get it ready to get native plants in the ground.”

New Welding Shop Open in VC

Valley City man Chuck Bowen has opened a new welding shop near the city. Bowen Welding, located in the old Trader Brothers building at 3175 117th Avenue Southeast, is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Bowen said he does farm repairs, welding projects for vehicles and various other jobs. He can be reached at (701) 840-5988.

APOC Fundraiser Today

The Abused Persons Outreach Center is holding a fundraiser today at the Valley City VFW from 4 to 8 p.m.
The event will feature a chicken and roast beef meal and a silent auction with over 175 baskets and other items donated by area businesses and organizations.

Leadership Classes Available to Community

The Valley City-Barnes County Development Corp. is teaming up with the Jamestown Chamber of Commerce and Dale Carnegie Business Group of North Dakota to offer servant leadership courses to individuals in Valley City and Jamestown.
The classes, which are put on by Dale Carnegie Training, a world-wide human resources and management consulting organization, allow people to get together and work on a community project together while gaining leadership skills.

City to Hold Budget Public Hearing

Financially, the City of Valley City is doing well. The preliminary 2014 budget is complete with an overall increase of 3.6 percent in expenditures.
A public hearing is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 16 for residents to voice objections or concerns regarding the proposed budget. According to Valley City City Auditor Avis Richter, all residents are welcome including renters or others who may not pay city taxes on property.

Teachers, School Board Still Apart on Negotiations

Salary increases and a step increase for teachers who receive advanced education degrees may lead the Valley City Education Association and the Valley City School board to impasse on teacher contract negotiations.
For 3-1/2 hours Thursday afternoon and into the evening members of the Valley City School District Negotiations Advisory Committee worked to mediate contract disagreements between teachers and the school district, but failed to find agreement.

Public Works Closing Early Tomorrow

Valley City Public Works offices will be closed Friday, Sept. 6 at 3 p.m. for remodeling but will be available for phone calls.

Regional 911 Link On Hold

Barnes County's 911 dispatch link with Stutsman and Richland counties will likely not happen for a couple of weeks as North Dakota computer system specialists finish needed connections and install equipment, said Barnes County Information Systems Manager Jason Thiel.
Wednesday Barnes County Emergency Emergency Manager Kim Franklin said new equipment and the county courthouse building are both waiting to complete a connection with Richland and Stutsman counties. “We will just have to wait to hook in.” Franklin said new routes and IP lines will both be installed.

24 Hour Theater Set for Weekend

The community is invited to join Valley City State University students and faculty for a 24-hour theater extravaganza this weekend. Director Jenni Lou Russi said they're looking for writers and directors to show up at VCSU's Vangstad Auditorium at 7 p.m. Friday evening. After a 24-hour challenge of writing and rehearsing, the free show will be held in Vangstad at 7 p.m. Saturday, also open to all.

Sex Offender Arrested

A convicted sex offender, who eluded officials for about three weeks after failing to register, was arrested in Valley City Tuesday and is now in the Barnes County Correctional Facility.
Michael Allen Nelson was arrested in a house in southwest Valley City without incident, according to Barnes County Sheriff Randy McClaflin.
Nelson is considered a lifetime high-risk offender who was convicted in 2009 for corruption/solicitation of a minor after having sex with a 14-year-old girl when he was 20.
