VC Keeps Mindy Morgenstern's Memory Alive With Garden

A garden honoring Mindy Morgenstern is still blooming seven years after she was murdered in her off-campus apartment in Valley City.
Morgenstern was a 22-year-old Valley City State University senior when she was strangled and stabbed to death by then-Barnes County jailer Moe Gibbs Sept. 13, 2006.
To honor Morgenstern, several Valley City people created a memorial garden in the spring of 2007. Dan Preston was one of the individuals who helped establish the foundation of the garden with his gifts and labor.

Saturday Air Show Set for Airport

The public is invited to a free air show Saturday at the Barnes County Municipal Airport, said Shawn Anderson, chairman of the Barnes County Airport Authority.
The show, which will be put on by Paul and Jarrod Lindemann, fixed base operators for the airport, will start at 6 p.m. and last for about 20 minutes, said airport Manager Mike Lerud.

Nutrition Club Open in VC

A new nutrition club has opened in Valley City. Amanda Goplin is an independent distributor of Herbalife, operating her business out of Valley Nutrition, located at 341 Central Avenue North.
Goplin said the goal of the nutrition club is to help people get healthy by developing a plan for members' different needs. In addition to selling Herbalife products, the club has a personal wellness coach available and will be starting fitness clubs and a weight loss challenge.

ND Secretary of State Al Jaeger Receives School Start Petition

On Monday, North Dakota Secretary of State Al Jaeger announced he has received a proposed petition to ask state voters to OK a requirement that school classes start after Labor Day.
Jaeger said the proposed initiative was proposed by Kelly Heinert of Mandan and Linda Striebel of Bismarck, and has 25 sponsoring committee members.

BC Commission Wants To Be Heard

Barnes County Commissioners are looking for a way to be be better heard at commission meetings.
Meeting Tuesday, Sept. 3, the five-member board heard a report on microphones from Management of Information Systems Department Director Jason Thiel.
Asked about a better sound system for the commission room, Thiel said a new set of microphones for commissioners plus a portable microphone for members of the public wanting to speak would cost about $2,235.

Students Build Pollinator Garden At Fish Hatchery

Students in Valley City State University's conservation biology class spent part of Friday afternoon at the Valley City National Fish Hatchery picnic area, planning and and working on a pollinator garden they are working on as part of the class.
Said Casey Williams, VCSU fisheries biology professor at VCSU, “The students are building a pollinator garden, trying to get it ready to get native plants in the ground.”

New Welding Shop Open in VC

Valley City man Chuck Bowen has opened a new welding shop near the city. Bowen Welding, located in the old Trader Brothers building at 3175 117th Avenue Southeast, is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Bowen said he does farm repairs, welding projects for vehicles and various other jobs. He can be reached at (701) 840-5988.

APOC Fundraiser Today

The Abused Persons Outreach Center is holding a fundraiser today at the Valley City VFW from 4 to 8 p.m.
The event will feature a chicken and roast beef meal and a silent auction with over 175 baskets and other items donated by area businesses and organizations.

Leadership Classes Available to Community

The Valley City-Barnes County Development Corp. is teaming up with the Jamestown Chamber of Commerce and Dale Carnegie Business Group of North Dakota to offer servant leadership courses to individuals in Valley City and Jamestown.
The classes, which are put on by Dale Carnegie Training, a world-wide human resources and management consulting organization, allow people to get together and work on a community project together while gaining leadership skills.
