Change of Plea Hearings Set for Faith Arson Suspects

August 19, 2014

Andrew Miklas, 25, and Nicole Lindermann, 18, are expected to plead guilty to arson and burglary charges for their roles in the October arson of Faith Lutheran Church in Valley City.

Change of plea hearings for both suspects are scheduled in Barnes County District Court for Aug. 25. Lindermann's plea hearing will be held at 2 p.m. Miklas' hearing is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

The Amazing Backpack Giveaway

Former VCSU Student Convicted of Murder

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A man who played college football in North Dakota has been convicted of killing one man and wounding another outside a Minneapolis club last fall.

A Hennepin County jury convicted Cedric Chappell Jr. on Thursday of murder and attempted murder. He's scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 11.
The 22-year-old played football at Valley City State University in Valley City, North Dakota.

He was charged in connection with an October gunfight outside the Blue Nile restaurant and bar in Minneapolis. Prosecutors say an argument broke out between two gangs, and 35 shots were fired.

VC Native Discovered Peggy Lee

Beverly Gay Duba, 95, a Valley City native now living in Saratoga, Calif., told the Times-Record she talked Peggy Lee into singing on KOVC radio for the first time after hearing Lee sing at a Valley City event in 1937. More in Friday's Times-Record.

Big Public Turn-Out for Wellness Center Unveiling

The Hi-Liner Activity Center was filled Wednesday as architects unveiled plans for a health, wellness and physical education center proposed by Valley City Parks and Recreation in conjunction with Valley City State University and Mercy Hospital. More in Friday's Times-Record.

VC Woman Wins $1,000 in Gas

Mariann Maine, Valley City, was the winner of the Times-Record's $1,000 gas giveaway. She was one of 19 who qualified to win $1,000 worth of gas certificates during the five-week contest. Of those 19, 17 were present at the Eagles Thursday evening for the final drawing.

Maine won a $500 gift certificate to Valley Service and a $500 gift certificate to Brothers III as the grand prize as well as a $20 gas gift certificate to Valley Service as a door prize.

"I can't believe it," Maine said. "I don't drive out of town that much, but I'll make good use of it."

Wellness Center Plans Unveiled

Residents filled the Hi-Liner Activity Center to learn more about a proposed wellness center Wednesday.

Architects unveiled plans for the $16 million center, which would likely be located on Eighth Avenue Southwest near the Bubble, and would include gymnasiums/open space, an aquatic center, a fitness area with an indoor track, child care area and office and classroom space.

Valley City Parks and Recreation would spearhead the project, with Valley City State University and Mercy Hospital as partners.
