Farmer Earns Donation for Wimbledon FD

Wimbledon farmer Betty McMillan recently directed a $2,500 donation Funded by America’s Farmers Grow Communities, to the Wimbledon Rural Fire Department. The donation will help the department enhance its first response vehicles.

SVFA to Host Fundraiser April 19

Sheyenne Valley Friends of Animals is gearing up for its annual spaghetti palooza fundraiser and hopes to attract new members.
Sheryl Solberg, SVFA's board president, said the April 19 spaghetti palooza, complete with a spaghetti supper, silent auction and Norwegian raffle, is the organization's biggest fundraiser that helps SVFA find homes for pets in need.
The fundraiser will take place at the Valley City Eagles Club from 5-7 p.m. Tickets are $5 each.

Chances Good for Moderate Flooding

Monday's massive 14.5 inch snowfall in Valley City could result in moderate flooding by late April, especially if the area experiences a fast melt, according to Mike Lukes, service hydrologist for the National Weather Service in Grand Forks.

City Approves Flood Protection Plans

The Valley City City Commission unanimously approved phase one of the city's permanent flood protection construction plan during a regular meeting Tuesday.
The plan, estimated at $12.5 million, includes permanent flood protection in the Valley City State University area.

Jefferson Third-Graders Raise Awareness for Autism

Third-graders at Jefferson Elementary School released blue balloons into the sky Wednesday afternoon in an effort to raise autism awareness. Autism is a developmental brain disorder that impairs a person's ability to communicate and interact socially.

The event was organized by Jennifer Cabezas, who has twin boys, Ethan and Shelby, in the third grade who have autism. Wednesday is World Autism Awareness Day, and Cabezas wants the community to know how many people are affected by the disease.

It's Snow Joke

Mother Nature played a cruel April Fool's prank by dumping more than a foot of wet, heavy snow to dig out from under on Tuesday. Throughout Valley City and Barnes County, snow blowers and plows could be spotted while vehicles spun and fishtailed through snow-packed streets.

Hearing for School, Teachers Rescheduled

A hearing to determine the legality of unilateral contracts that the Valley City Public School Board issued to Valley City teachers has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 16 at 1 p.m. at the Barnes County Courthouse.
