VC English Corner Starting

May 13, 2014

A new informal group designed to help non-native speakers improve their use of English will start soon when English Corner has its first meeting 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Valley City-Barnes County Public Library. More in Tuesday's issue of the Times-Record.

VC Biologist Honored for Crane Research

Valley City's Dr. Gary Krapu, retired U.S. Geological Survey wildlife biologist and North Dakota native, recently received the L. H. Walkinshaw Crane Conservation Award for his career-long research on sandhill cranes.

Relay Hosting Talent Show

Barnes County Relay for Life is hosting a talent show during this year's event. Nicole Cleveland, activities and entertainment chair for the Barnes County Relay for Life, encourages those who have a talent and would like to showcase it to help raise money to fight against cancer to sign up for the contest.

She said talents can be anything — juggling, singing, magic, gymnastics, dancing and more.

SVCTC Took 5th In State Contest

Valley City's team came in fifth in the state at the May 2 Ford/AAA Student Auto Sills competition at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds. Wyatt Hatcher and Micah Anderson came in fifth of 10 teams and 20 students from across North Dakota. More in Monday's issue of the Times-Record.

Casey's Opens in VC

Valley City's former Stop-n-Go convenience store opened as a Casey's General Store Friday. Area supervisor Heidi Marcyes said the store closed Wednesday for the transition and re-opened Friday.

BREAKING: Missing Student: Warrant for Arrest

While North Dakota State College of Science student Andrew Sadek remains missing, it has been confirmed that the 20-year-old from the Valley City area has an outstanding arrest warrant in Richland County for two counts of delivery of a controlled substance.

Jazzin' Concert Next Thursday

Valley City High School Band Director Tom Kjelland and his students are gearing up for the annual Jazzin' Concert next Thursday.

The concert will be held Thursday, May 15 at 7 p.m. in the Hi-Liner Activity Center with tickets available before the show. Pre-sale of tickets for the show will be Monday, May 12 from 5-6:30 p.m. in the HAC lobby and before the sixth-grade and junior high concert on Tuesday, May 13. A lunch will be served at the show.

Paul Sandness to Speak at VCSU Commencement May 17

Valley City State University alumnus Paul Sandness—general counsel and corporate secretary of MDU Resources Group (MDU) in Bismarck, N.D.—will deliver the keynote address at VCSU’s 122nd commencement exercises, to be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 17, 2014, in W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse on the VCSU campus.

Sandness grew up on a farm near LaMoure, N.D., and then attended VCSU, graduating in 1976 with a major in English education and a minor in German. He went on to earn a Juris Doctor degree from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1979.
