As of Wednesday, the North Dakota Department of Health reported five new human cases of West Nile virus since reporting the first case two weeks ago, bringing the statewide total to 19. This compares to only four cases confirmed in 2011. The North Dakota Department of Health has not detected increases in West Nile virus activity similar to what has been reported in recent weeks since 2007 when there were 369 human cases reported. Of the 19 confirmed cases, five have been hospitalized.
Chad Petersen from city engineering firm Kadrmas, Lee and Jackson told the Valley City city commission that road construction projects in Valley City are moving along steadily as most are scheduled to wrap up in September and October.
âWe have really millions of dollars at work here in the city, getting rid of those pot holes,â Valley City City Administrator David Schelkoph said during Mondayâs meeting.

The fourth annual Sheyenne Valley Friends of Animals Walk-And-Wag-Athon will be held all day Saturday at Chautauqua Parkâs dog park. Event organizer Tracy Lee said the fundraiser has been increasing successful since it began as an effort to raise funds to build the dog park. Now the group uses the money it raises at the Walk-And-Wag to offset the medical expenses for animals in their foster program. The SVFA spays/neuters and microchips every animal in the program for what Lee estimated was an average of $230 per animal.
Young people aged 8 to 17 will be able to take free airplane rides during the Saturday, Sept. 8, during the two-day Wings and Wheels Air Show running Sept. 8 and 9 at the Barnes County Municipal Airport.
Toby McPherson, EAA member and co-chair of the event, said Thursday the free rides for youths are being offered through the Experimental Aircraft Association Young Eagles Program, and will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. Along with the free rides for kids, McPherson said the Fargo EAA chapter is also sponsoring a breakfast at the air show from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday.
The Legacy Place, an assisted living facility in Valley City, is currently in the process of building its third triplex of town homes, known has The Legacy Townhomes, that surround the facility. Owner Paul Diegel says the town homes offer great amenities and can be customized to the ownerâs liking.
Six D Construction, owned by Diegel, has already developed two triplexes and is just completing a third. The triplexes consist of three connected town homes with three-stall insulated and heated garages.
They are available for purchase and each has its own lot.

How is your pet feeling? This is an issue that all pet companions deal with every day: Has Fifi eaten? Is Spot active? Did Buddy meet me at the door? etc. As pet companions we all understand how important this âmonitoringâ can be. My golden retriever quit eating, didnât sleep, and would not come in once she was outside. Something was wrong. I knew it and didnât want to admit it. It looked serious to me so I took her in to the vet. Yep, she was very ill and had little time to live.
Students spend much of their time on Valley City State Universityâs campus in classrooms, labs and athletic facilities, but students, together with faculty and staff, arguably spend most of their time at VCSU in the dining facilities located inside the student center.
The cafeteria, or simply, âThe Caf,â which has been operated by catering company Sodexo Food Service for over 30 years, has recently undergone a $425,000 renovation and expansion in service.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Wednesday to unveil the new facillity.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple late Tuesday toured the John Deere manufacturing plant in Valley City where company officials are in the process of hiring about 65 additional workers to meet the plantâs production workload.
 The John Deere Valley City Seeding Group currently employs about 320 people. Plant Manager David Bradford and other John Deere employees led Dalrymple and North Dakota Commerce Commissioner Al Anderson on a tour of the plant which manufactures crop seeders and tillage equipment.
The burning smell could be detected throughout downtown Valley City in the early morning hours on Wednesday, but only those in the vicinity of the 400 block of Fifth Avenue Southwest could identify the source.
