Meeting Tuesday, Barnes County Commissioners decided to not build a small garage on courthouse grounds to house a Bobcat skid steer loader. More in Wednesday's issue of the Times-Record.

BC OKs BCHD Software

Barnes County on Tuesday authorized spending $10,000 to buy the Barnes County Highway Department software management system. Presenting the case for buying the software were Jason Thiel, Barnes County IT director, and Jamie Smith, administrative assistant for the highway department. Wimbledon Has Community Garden

Residents in small Barnes County town Wimbledon enjoy a community garden that was started by local resident LuAnn Martin in 2009. The garden features various plants and flowers planted by her, a walking path, a few places to sit, and a mural on the side of the building paid for by Wimbledon's Mary Beth Olombel and painted by Linda Schwartz, of Fried Township.

Dahlberg Named VCSU Interim President

Dr. Margaret Dahlberg, vice president for academic affairs at Valley City State University, has been appointed interim president of VCSU by the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education.

Dahlberg will begin serving as VCSU interim president on July 1. She will succeed VCSU’s current president, Steven W. Shirley, who has been appointed president of Minot State University.

Greg Vanney, VCSU director of marketing and communications, said Tuesday the process of selecting a permanent president continues.

VCSU Choir to Host Final Concert of Year

The Valley City State University Concert Choir and University Singers will present their final concert of the season on Friday at Epworth United Methodist Church, 680 Eighth Avenue SW, in Valley City. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to support the work of the VCSU music department. The VCSU Quantum Brass will also perform as guest artists on the program.

Times-Record Awarded by State Newspaper Assoc.

The Valley City Times-Record won several awards at the North Dakota Newspaper Association's Better Newspaper Contest, Friday May 2 in Bismarck.

Reporter Bonnie Jo Conley-Hanson took first in agriculture photography; reporters Heidi Harris and Conley-Hanson took third in overall design excellence for a the Harvest section; and sports editor Jake McNeal took second in outdoor recreation photography.

Student Still Missing

May 6, 2014

Rogers native Andrew Sadek, 20, left his dorm at the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton at 2 a.m. Friday, May 1, and vanished. As of Monday, authorities had not found a trace of the student.

Sadek, the son of John and Tammy Sadek of Rogers, is a 2012 graduate of Valley City Senior High School with ties to Valley City and Rogers. He is a second-year student at NDSCS studying electrical technology.

MDU Gives $25K to Rhoades

Montana Dakota Resources Group, Bismarck, recently presented a check to the faculty at the Valley City State University Science Department for $25,000 to be used to purchase needed equipment for the newly renovated and expanded Rhoades Science Center. More in Monday's issue of the Times-Record.

LaVonne Lawrence Honored at Ambassador's Open House

Long-time Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce Amassador Chairwoman LaVonne Lawrence was honored Friday at an open house at the Rosebud Visitors Center. Lawrence said she served as an ambassador for 12 years and as chairman for 10 years. The Valley City resident said she moved to Valley City 15 years ago, “and I went to work in 2001. I did it (became an ambassador) to meet people. I like people.”
