Fund, CaringBridge Set Up for Accident Victim

A fund has been set up at Dacotah Bank for Geraldine (Gerri) Knutson, 65, of Valley City, who was seriously injured in a multi-vehicle accident Friday, Aug. 16. A CaringBridge website has also been set up for her at www.caringbridge.org/visit/geraldinegerriknutson. Visitors to the site can track her recovery progress and leave messages on the guestbook.
Knutson's 2012 Chevrolet Impala was struck head-on on Main Street by a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, estimated by the North Dakota Highway Patrol at about 70 mph.

CCH Offers Hot Weather Safety Tips

Because of extremely high temperatures across North Dakota including Barnes County this week, the state health department is urging everyone to take precautions to protect their health, said Dr. Terry Dwelle, state health officer for the North Dakota Department of Health.
The National Weather Service predicts temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s through Saturday, with the Wednesday heat index value at 95.

New Principal at Washington

Washington Elementary School students have a new principal this year. Chad Lueck replaces Wayne Denault, who retired the end of last school year. Lueck said he is excited to join the district.
Before taking the job in Valley City, Lueck worked in the Litchville-Marion School district for seven years, five of which he was the elementary principal.
Lueck, originally from Lidgerwood, N.D., graduated from Valley City State University with a degree in elementary education, and received his master's degree in educational leadership from Tri-College University.

Harvest Highway Woes

Fall driving means more than watching out for school buses, motorists must also pay close attention to the possibility of encountering large, slow-moving harvest equipment while traveling on country roads.
The North Dakota Department of Transportation wants to urge motorists to use caution and share the road with harvest equipment during harvest.

Fort Ransom Sodbusters Days Set for Sept. 7-8

North Dakota Lieutenant Governor Drew Wrigley is helping recognize the 30th anniversary of Sodbuster Days taking place at Fort Ransom State Park on Sept. 7-8.
Fort Ransom State Park Manager John Kwapinski said Tuesday, “It's a special one, and the Lieutenant Governor plans to attend. It's special because this is the 30th year the Fort Ransom Sodbuster Association has been holding Sodbusters Day at the park, and for an all volunteer organization, that's a long time. They (the association) helped put Fort Ransom on the map in our early years in the 1980s.”

Dog Shooter Goes to Court

A Valley City man who is suing the city for $25,000 had his first pre-trial hearing Tuesday on disorderly conduct charges after he said he shot at two dogs.
The defendant was arrested weeks after he fired several shots at two pit bull dogs he said were threatening him and his girlfriend.
While the man did not plead to the charges Tuesday, he did request that his weapons be returned; a request Municipal Court Judge Tom Goven denied citing the defendant's past conviction for disorderly conduct in a Minot case that also involved firearms.

Mud Bash Set for Labor Day Weekend

HJ Norman, Valley City, recently opened a mud park southeast of town, and plans to host a bash this Labor Day weekend, complete with off-road mudding, live music and camping.
The event will be held at Winkler Offroad Park, owned by Bill Winkler and run by Triple Twisted Motorsports, of which Norman is president. The park, located two miles south and one mile east off Interstate 94 exit 298, has five sloughs available for off-road mudding with trucks and ATVs/UTVs.

VCHS Booster Club Burger and Brat Feed Friday

The Valley City High School Booster Club burger and brat feed will be held Friday, Aug. 30 at Hanna Field during the football game. Serving begins at 6 p.m. Free-will offering.

Bullorama in Sibley Labor Day Weekend

The Dazey Sodbusters Club will celebrate its 68th anniversary this year with the 10th Sodbuster Stampede Bullorama in Sibley on Sunday. Along with a full day of bull riding, dancing and pedal tractor pulling, the Sodbuster club will honor Larry Martin as the 2013 Outstanding Sodbuster of the Year.
martin, an 18-year member of the Sodbusters, was voted outstanding Sodbuster by his peers. According to Sodbuster president, Tony Heinze, Martin does whatever is necessary for the club including participating in fundraising events mowing and cleaning with he does with help from his grandsons.

Dakota Plains Seeks Merger With CHS

Valley City-based Dakota Plains Cooperative will ask its farmer stockholders to approved a full merger with CHS Inc., the nation's largest farmer cooperative later this month or in October, said general manager Ken Astrup.
Said Astrup Monday, “We started the process early last spring, and in early August the board decided to propose to stockholders a full merger.”
