Hunting Land Dedicated near Litchville

May 19, 2014

A dedication ceremony was held Friday for a section of recently-donated hunting land near Litchville. The Alton, Orris and Orvin Olson Wildlife Management Area will provide wildlife habitat and public hunting land on a full section of property donated by the family of the late brothers whose wish was to turn the property into public hunting land.

Food Bank Thanks CHS

The Great Plains Food Bank, a program of Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota, has named Dakota Plains Cooperative parent CHS Inc. one of three statewide partners as 2013 Hunger Relief Champions, in recognition of the support given the food bank. More in Monday's issue of the Times-Record.

Officials: Leave Signs Alone

Leave campaign signs alone, say both Valley City Police Chief Fred Thompson and Barnes County Sheriff Randy McClaflin. McClaflin said Thursday he had received reports from several people, “That there has been vandalism to campaign signs in town.” More in Monday's issue of the Times-Record.

Sheriff Seeks Jail Rec Area

The Barnes County jail currently does not have an outdoor recreation area for prisoners, needed to meet state jail guidelines. County Sheriff Randy McClaflin said Thursday the jail stopped using the outdoor recreation area for prisoners, “After the wind broke off some of the posts (supporting the fence) and broke off some of the privacy netting.” More in Friday's issue of the Times-Record.

CCHD Addresses Alcohol Issues

Barnes County residents recently surveyed do not believe alcohol abuse is a serious problem among adults, and they believe underage drinking in Barnes County is less of a problem than it is in other parts of the state. But the statistics imply otherwise.

According to data collected by the Valley City-Barnes County Health District, alcohol use is socially acceptable, and underage drinking occurs and the acceptable age is between 14 and 16 years of age.

New Events Planned for Rally

Some new events are planned for this year's Rally in the Valley community days weekend. In addition to the Relay for Life taking place that weekend, new events are the Mighty Thomas Carnival and live music following the second annual mud bogs.

Ready, Set, Garden!

Mary, Mary, quite contrary; how does your garden grow?
If Mary is in North Dakota, her garden probably isn't growing very well at all.

But all is not lost. According to horticulturalist Esther McGinnis, Cass County Extension Agent, while gardening season is lagging behind the average, its about on-par with last year.
"We're going to be planting later than usual," she said.
