A Fessenden, N.D. man was arrested Sunday night after driving through a fence on a Valley City property and attempting to use a six-year-old as a human shield from a taser.
Brent Messmer, 28, was arrested after 9-1-1 calls were made regarding a white pickup that was seen speeding on Fifth Avenue Northeast and later drove through a fence in the 1000 block of 12th Avenue Southeast. Upon responding to the area, Valley City Police Department officers found the driver of the pickup and a young female walking in the area, according to a media release from VCPD Chief Fred Thompson.
Junior the therapy dog smiles at the Valley City Public Schools recognition and social banquet Wednesday, May 6 at the Hi-Liner Activity Center Lobby. Junior worked with Alaine Toso in the Title I department of Valley City Junior High School and Jefferson Elementary School. Both will retire the end of this school year.
Two area residents were arrested Friday by the Barnes County Sheriff's Office for their roles in thefts from a rural Dazey farm.
Nicholas Barr Cascone, 37, of Dazey, and Autumn Lynn Rasmusson, 28, of Dazey, were arrested in Grand Forks County after the sheriff's office recovered a stolen vehicle, two stolen firearms and some farm equipment reported stolen from a rural Dazey farm, according to a press release from the Barnes County Sheriff's Office.
Valley City Clean Up Week will be held from Monday, May 11 to Friday, May 15. The free pickup and disposal is for residential waste only. Valley City residents are asked to put their garbage, including the extra, in their regular pick up spot by 7 a.m. on their regular garbage pickup day. There is no limit on the number of bags, cans, boxes, etc and no extra charge. A full list of what will not be picked up is available on the city's website, www.valleycity.us.

A gas main was damaged by contractors in the area of Sixth Avenue and Sixth Street Northeast in Valley City. Residents are asked to stay clear of the area.

Wes Anderson, curator of the Barnes County Historical Society Museum provided this photograph taken in 1944 of the 1943-44 College High School basketball team.
That year the team played 21 games, won 18 and lost three. During that season, College High School scored a totals of 655 points, and its opponents scored 404 points.
Valley City State University's Earth Day festival activities have been moved into Rhoades Science Center. Festivities begin at 5 p.m. today.
The Valley City-Barnes County Development Corp. and Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce shared their successes and future plans at their joint annual banquet Tuesday, April 28 at Woodland Steakhouse.

At a Tuesday meeting, Barnes County commissioners told Jack Ertelt and Keith Colville the county might provide the Valley City Barnes County Development Corp. $50,000 in economic development funds for a Valley City Wellness Center this year and possibly more in future years to a maximum total of $250,000.
