VCSU Sets Earth Day Celebration

Valley City State University will host its fourth annual Earth Day Festival on Wednesday, May 6, beginning at 5 p.m. on the campus green north of McFarland Hall and west of Rhoades Science Center.

CORRECTION: Tod Rohde Benefit Scheduled for Monday at Valley City VFW

A benefit supper for Valley City resident Tod Rohde will be held Monday, May 4 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Valley City VFW.

Tod, a long-time employee of Enterprise Sales, collapsed on March 9 and has been hospitalized since. At first, doctors thought he was suffering from pancreatitis, because he had in the past, but later determined it was something else, though it's unknown what is causing his illness.

$74K Raised at VCSU Scholarship Auction

Valley City State University raised $74,000 for its scholarship programs at an auction Friday, April 24, said Kim Hesch, assistant director for advancement and alumni relations at VCSU.

Coast Guard Cutter Namesake Homesteaded in Tower City

The U.S. Coast Guard's newest Fast Response Cutter, the Isaac Mayo, which was recently commissioned in Key West, Fla., has a Barnes County tie. The ship's namesake, an east coast whaler skipper, went on to homestead a farm near Tower City.

VC Students Learn About Aerospace

Austin Brandt, son of Terry and Kristi Brandt and Justin Roswick, son of Cody and Bonita Roswick, participated in the 4-H Aerospace Event held at the University of North Dakota's Aerospace Science center April 26-27, said Bonita Roswick.

VCHS Music Department Presents Jazzin' 15

The music department at Valley City High School will present its instrumental spring concert, "Jazzin' 15 — Broadway Live," on Thursday, May 14, at 7 p.m. in the Hi-Liner Activity Center. The concert features the VCHS Jazz Band. Other performing ensembles will be the senior band, varsity band, seventh-grade band and eighth-grade band.

Tickets for the concert are $5. Table seats and bleacher seats are available. Pre-sale tickets will be available on Monday, May 4, from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Valley City High School cafeteria (door 6) outside the Kiwanis pancake supper.

37 Inducted into National Honor Society

Valley City High School held its National Honor Society induction on Monday, April 27. Thirty-seven new members were inducted into the local chapter and join 27 existing members.

The pillars of National Honor Society are character, leadership, service, and scholarship. Inductees must provide evidence of these four traits on their application form and have maintained a 3.5 grade point average or higher cumulative grade point average.

Fog Blamed for Highway 46 Crash

Heavy fog was determined to be a contributing factor in a two-vehicle crash that caused minor injuries to one man.

The accident occurred at the intersection of North Dakota Highways 41 and 1 near Kathryn Tuesday morning. A pick-up driven by 79-year-old Walter Haberman was westbound on Highway 46. After stopping at the intersection, Haberman pulled into the intersection and was struck by a semi-trailer, driven by Mike Kleinsaffer, 69, traveling north on Highway 1 at about 45 miles-per-hour, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Kiwanis Celebrates 100 Years; VC Club Plans Annual Pancake Feed

Kiwanis is celebrating its 100th anniversary as Valley City's chapter plans its annual pancake feed Monday, May 4 at the Valley City High School Cafeteria from 5 to 7 p.m.
