Local girl scouts take part in first camp of the year

Mild temperatures and minimal precipitation made for perfect camp weather last week when the Valley City Service Unit Girl Scouts enjoyed two evenings at Camp Tonweya-Tiayta, which means “Scouts Home,” located near the Valley City National Fish Hatchery.

Troop leader Kirsten Dockter explained that some camps are affiliated through their headquarters, Girl Scouts Dakota Horizons, but this one was held by the local troop leaders.

FCCU raises $12K for Relay for Life

First Community Credit Union (FCCU) recently held fundraisers to raise money for Relay for Life, totaling more than $12,000. FCCU has chosen a different organization for each quarter to raise money and awareness for these organizations.

All of FCCU’s 14 branches sold frozen Pizza Corner pizzas in which $2,800 was raised for Relay for Life, with FCCU’s Wishek branch selling the most pizzas at 350. Proceeds collected from employees wearing jeans on designated days were also donated to Relay for Life and luminaries were sold at the branches.

Tobacco coordinator backs ban on smoking

Vicki Rosenau, tobacco coordinator for the City-County Health District, backs a proposed North Dakota ballot initiative to ban smoking in all indoor workplaces, including bars, a step that the state Legislature has refused to take since lawmakers approved broad smoking restrictions seven years ago.

The measure, which a group called Smoke-Free North Dakota submitted to Secretary of State Al Jaeger on Wednesday, would cover “e-cigarettes,” which produce an odorless, nicotine-laced vapor that’s similar to tobacco smoke.

VC has another successful Rally

If Valley City seemed a bit more populated this weekend, it’s probably because visitors and high school reunion-goers joined Valley City residents as they soaked up at this weekend’s annual Rally in the Valley.

The weather was pleasant but windy at times for the celebration hosted by the Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce. The weekend was jam packed with activities for all ages in Valley City.

You’re reading these words so that means you have one. Some of you have more than one because that’s how your mama rolls. You may have had the good one or you could have been stuck with the bad one. Whichever one you got you’ve been affected. This isn’t a riddle though it is beginning to sound like one. Simply, I’m talking about dads.

I figure now is as good a time as any for a little Blonde on the Prairie therapy session. Go ahead and sit down on my couch. Get comfortable if you’d like to.

Goodbye to a Goodfella: Mob informant Henry Hill dead at 69

“As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster,” said actor Ray Liotta as he immortalized mobster-turned-FBI informant Henry Hill in the 1990 Martin Scorsese film “Goodfellas.”

Hill was an associate in the New York-based Lucchese crime family and testified against mafia members following the theft of $5.8 million from a Lufthansa Airlines vault.

Alumni Basketball and Band Jam Saturday

What may soon be an official Rally in the Valley event is coming back again this year. The VCHS Alumni Basketball and Band Jam will be Saturday, June 16th. The jam consists of the VCHS Reunion Marching Band performing in the annual Rally in the Valley parade plus an All 80’s and 90’s Alumni Basketball game to be held at the City Auditorium in Valley City.

Starting at 10 a.m., the VCHS Hi-Liner Reunion Marching Band will perform in the Rally in the Valley Parade down Central Avenue. at 4:00 p.m. The VCHS Alumni Basketball Game and Pep Rally will take place in the City Auditorium.

Voters select leaders, draw Nov. battle lines

The dust has settled and the battle lines are drawn for the general election in November.

Following Tuesday’s primary election, Rick Berg, Kevin Cramer and Kirsten Baesler secured their slots on the Republican ticket for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives and North Dakota’s Superintendent of Schools, respectively. The Republican ticket held the only contested elections in the state.

Also claiming victory were Libertarian candidates Roland Riemers, Eric Olson and Josh Voytek who are running for Governor, U.S. House of Representatives and Public Service Commission respectively.

Bridge City Cruisers excited about this weekend’s show

The Bridge City Cruisers, Valley City’s car club, will be hosting its 14th annual car show on Central Avenue and Main Street in Valley City on Saturday, and club president Terry Johnson said they’re hoping to fill downtown this year.

The club, which started in 1998, has grown from 15 members to more than 100. Johnson said, “A few guys got together and put together a club and it has kind of evolved.”

The car show will feature unique and classic vehicles belonging to residents from all over North Dakota as well as the entire upper Midwest.
