Some ND Facilities Received Products Linked to Meningitis

Six North Dakota pharmacies or clinics have received products from the New England Compounding Company, which has produced medications associated with a meningitis outbreak in the United States.

Kirby Kruger, director of the division of disease control for the North Dakota Department of Health, said the department has notified these facilities to inform them of new updated Food and Drug Administration recommendations.

Although all products from NECC have been recalled, not all of the NECC products sent to North Dakota facilities are subject to the new FDA guidance.

Radon Levels High in State

North Dakota is one of only two states in the entire nation that is rated a zone one for radon risk, according to Marcie Bata, director of environmental health at Central Valley Health District. In conjunction with Home Indoor Air Quality Month, state and local health officials are urging North Dakota residents to test their homes for radon and to fix any radon problems that are discovered.

“Each year, (radon) is estimated to cause 21,000 lung cancer deaths in the United States,” Bata said, adding that in can happen 5 to 25 years after exposure.

VC Robotics Club Rallies at Competition

Area students recently competed in A BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology), robotics competition at the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton. The Valley City robotics team, whose members call themselves the Hi-Linerds, took home prizes that included first place for “Most Robust Robot,” first place for “Mentor of the Year,” second place for their robot, third place for their engineering notebook, and third place overall. The club’s second place distinction earned it a spot in the Regional BEST competition in Fargo in December.

Kids Celebrate Halloween Early

Area children got to wear their costumes early this year during the eighth annual Ruckus at the Rec that was held Friday evening at the Recreation Center gym in Valley City.

The event featured an evening of carnival games for all children ages pre-school through sixth grade. Parents and grandparents also joined their parents dressed in costume. Community and surrounding area businesses and organizations as well as interested individuals also assisted with the activities.

Doing It Gangnam Style

Members of the Valley City High School football team danced to the hit song “Gangnam Style” at a pep rally Friday. The pep rally was held for the football team, which beat Bishop Ryan 24-14 in Minot Saturday in the state tournament. The rally also celebrated the cross country team, which competed in the state meet Saturday.

New DL Water Soon Expected At Dam

Sheyenne River water flows are expected to increase early this week as water pumped from the east end of Devils Lake begins arriving, said Schueneman manager of the Baldhill Dam for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Friday Schueneman said North Dakota once again Monday began pumping water out of the east end of the lake into the Sheyenne River after repairing a pump that was out of action.

Flu Vaccines Available to VC Residents

The season of the flu is already upon us, and health officials in Valley City urge anybody age 6 months and older to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Local pharmacies and City-County Health District offer flu shots with no appointment necessary.

Sarah Hansen, Registered Nurse at the City-County Health District, said the CCHD is open to give flu shots from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The cost of shots at the CCHD for private pay is $32. They can also be covered by private insurance, Medicaid and Medicare.
