Libertarian seeks N.D. seat in U.S. House seat

Eric Olson, the Libertarian candidate for North Dakota’s lone seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, has lived in Fargo for most of his life. He studied business administration and computer networking at Minnesota State University Moorhead and Northwest Tech. He runs XPI L.L.C., an inventory business that serves convenience stores, and also works for IMS, an internet retailer that sells military surplus equipment.

There’s been a lot of candidates going after that House seat, how do you think you’ll fare this year?

The second you and I were born we became one. Most people were too busy goo-goo-ga-gaing over you to give you the proper title. As we age we should demand being recognized for being one. I’m venturing to guess the entire economic outlook on our city would skyrocket if only we could teach each other that we are one to one another.

The thing about being one is that we too have to recognize all other breathing beings as being one too. But do we? ’m learning that it’s not second nature to recognize it at all.

Cramer faces Kalk in Tuesday primary

Kevin Cramer, one of North Dakota’s three Public Service Commissioners, will face off against fellow Commissioner Brian Kalk for the Republican nomination to the state’s lone seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Last week, Cramer sat down with Times-Record reporter David Luessen for an interview.

Ideas sought for SRV Scenic Byway

The Byway Executive Committee is seeking ideas for expansion and improvements to the Sheyenne River Valley National Scenic Byway.
Contractor for the project is the engineering firm Kadrmas, Lee & Jackson.

A series of meetings have been set, with the next one 7 p.m Monday in Valley City at the Regional Tech Center on Winter Show Road, and the final one June 14 at 7 p.m. at the Sodbusters Club in Sibley.

According to a letter from KLJ, “We need your input. After 10 years the Sheyenne River Valley National Scenic Byway is ready to grow again.”

Erma Overby: Her life as a nurse and her legacy in Barnes County

“Do you know if Erma is home?” Sandy Hall recalls a time when she was at a local business and overheard a woman ask another that question. The woman was referring to Hall’s mother, the school and county nurse, and just about everybody’s friend.

“No one had to say Erma Overby,” Hall explained, “Most everyone knew her by her first name.”

Erma Overby was a nurse in Barnes County who spent much of her career working as the school and county nurse. Overby was also instrumental in starting many of the healthcare organizations that exist today in Valley City.

Country Farm Life new Fort Ransom program

A new program is debuting at Fort Ransom State Park this year called “Country Farm Life: Portraits of North Dakota Living at the Turn of the Century,” announces FRSP Manager John Kwapinski.

Each Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. programs featuring pioneer living in North Dakota will be held at the park’s Sunne Demonstration Farm.

NDGOP rally to be largest in years

The North Dakota Republican-GOP will hold the annual Republican Roundup on Friday and Saturday in Fargo, and state spokesman Matt Becker said the fundraising rally could not come at a better time.

“This will be the largest summer event we have held in years,” Becker said in a news release. “We expect to welcome a big crowd and energize a lot of new supporters.”

Dems pick their delegates

The District 24 Democrats held their Presidential Caucus and delegate selection meeting Tuesday night at the Skoal Room at Valley City State University.

The State Democratic party had similar meetings in every district in North Dakota on Tuesday. The meetings were part of a new process of selecting delegates to send to the North Dakota Democratic Non Partisan League meeting June 16 in Bismarck. At the state meeting, delegates for the National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., from September 3 through 6 will be selected.

Body shop under new, local ownership

Valley Auto Body and Storage, LLC has purchased what used to be Quality Auto Body Shop from former owner Ken Schwanke of Fargo.

The body shop and storage units are now under local ownership. Jerry Bennefeld, Craig Larsen and Dan Taylor, all of Valley City, decided to make the investment.

“We all three have experience with rental property and we were looking to diversify,” Bennefeld said.

Larsen said that he and Bennefeld own rental property together and are always looking to find new opportunities.
